Read Across America Week 2015

Red Bank Elementary school had many different activities to celebrate Dr. Seusss birthday and Read
Across America Week. Festivities included a spirit week with a Dr. Seuss theme for each day. As a result of
winning a drawing at the NJEA Teachers Convention, Red Bank Elementary had a notable surprise at their
assembly on Tuesday, March 03. It was the Cat in the Hat, which stood seven feet tall! The Cat was a part of
an assembly that encourages students to continue to read as they get older. The Cat shook all of the students
hands, took a picture with the Staff and participated in a special cheer to get students excited to participate
in Red Banks reading challenge.
Last year, the goal to collectively read 4,920 books was accomplished; so this year there is an even
bigger challenge to be met! This years challenge is to read a total of 5,000 books! This total will be books
that are read beyond the school day. To keep track of the childrens weekly progress, reading logs will be
sent home and collected each Friday in March. The first day of the log collection will begin on Friday,
March 6th 2015.
If the school wide goal is achieved, all students will be rewarded with a showing of The Lorax movie
and a soft pretzel party! The extra incentive of a no homework pass will be presented to the class with the
highest amount of books read per week. Class reading tallies will be displayed in the Red Bank All-Purpose
room. The students enjoyed the teachers reading the Cat in the Hat to them. A special thanks to all of the
Literacy Coaches and the Read Across America Committee for organizing the assembly!
