Algebraic, Proportional, and

Mathematical Reasoning
MAT 3333

Standard 5:
Application of
Content
The teacher
understands how to
connect concepts and
use differing
perspectives to engage
learners in critical
thinking, creativity,
and collaborative
problem solving
related to authentic
local and global issues.

This class deepened my

understanding of
mathematical reasoning and
the importance of helping
students develop higher
order thinking skills. We read
and discussed articles from
the National Council of
Teacher of Mathematics that
explained the importance of
initiating higher order thinking
tasks in the math classroom.
We also explored activities
from the NCTM Illuminations
website and other activities
that could be incorporated
into the math classroom.
During our classroom
discussions we talked about

the importance using of

manipulatives and
technology in lessons to
promote student problem
solving skills. I developed
lessons that used NCTM
resources and taught them
to the class. The peer and
teacher feedback I
received helped me to
improve my lesson plans.
One particular lesson I
enjoyed creating and
teaching was about
exponential growth. The
lesson integrated literature,
technology, and cultural
diversity with the book One
Grain of Rice by Demi.
