Introduction

For this observation,

I interviewed a fouryear-old girl named
Pearly about her
artwork. Here is a
picture of her
artwork. Its an
airplane!

Dialogue
Me: Good morning Pearly! I wanted
to talk with you a little bit about your
picture. Why did you make this one?
Pearly: I just wanted to decorate.
Me: What is it under the airplane?
Pearly: Bread.
Me: Bread? Like what we eat?
Pearly: Yeah. This is just a
decoration.
Me: So bread under the airplane?

Dialogue
Pearly: Its a bird airplane. I
put these lights on just for
decoration. And this is the
beak!
Me: And this the airplane
right?
Pearly: Yeah, its just
decoration for the bread.
Me: So we can eat this one?
Pearly: The bread?
Me: And the airplane?

Dialogue
Me: Its a cake?
Pearly: Its not a cake! Its just a
decoration.
Me: Oh, so you put an airplane on the
bread?
Pearly: For just a big surprise!
Me: What is this part? It looks like a
dinosaur.
Pearly: Lights, like on a string. You
dont eat those.
Me: And what about at the front?

Dialogue
Pearly: The beak.
Me: So its a bird.
Pearly: A bird airplane. The
wings flap. Theres only one
eye because the other eye is
on the other side.
Me: Did anyone help you
make it?
Pearly: I made it myself.

Analysis
After talking with Pearly about her artwork, it is clear to me that she is
very creative and also in the pictorial stage of her artistic development. I
put her in the pictorials stage because she is clearly making recognizable
designs in her artwork. I also found it very creative with how all of the
elements of the art are somewhat related. A bird flies like an airplane, it
has wings, it eats bread. I just found how she combined all of these
related elements together very interesting and uninhibited. Pearly is
uninhibited in her artwork and this can be seen how she kept saying, this
is just for decoration, when talking about her bird airplane. If she thought
it would make the artwork look better whether is made sense or not she
added it to her drawing. I also feel that she is exhibiting more use of her
right brain because her drawing seems to be based on just what she is
feeling. Combining a bird with an airplane over a piece of bread is very
much based on emotion an intuition in my opinion. It feels like a concept
an older child would come up with. As far as her fine motor skills, I feel
that she is well developed in that her lines are sharp and she colors
cleanly within her lines.
