The pie charts illustrate the causes of world wide land degradation. At first glance it is
clear that the main factor influencing the degradation was over-grazing.
Over-grazing was contributed more than a third to the land degradation. Another major
factor influencing the land degradation was deforestation, with less than

a third of land

degradation for this cause. However, interestingly, only a small minority, 7% left for other
causes, which another 28% was left for over-cultivation.
Below the pie charts, there is a table lists cause of land degradation in North America,
Europe, and Oceania. Europe had the largest total land degraded among the three regions with a
total 23% and 9.8% of that degradation was caused by deforestation. In another side, Oceania
had a total 13% and the main factor for causing that was over-grazing. North America, where
over-cultivation was the main factor of its land degradation, had a very small number, with total
5% land degradation.
