Slaves/Servant
Slaveswouldhavetobefreedbeforebeingabletoparticipate,considering
thatbecomingthevillagegriotwouldmovethemoutoftheirlowcastetooneclosetoor
sometimesconsiderednobility.Insomevillages,youwouldntevenbeabletotryoutifyouwere
apartofthislowofaclass,whetheryouwerefreedornot.Thiswouldmeanthattheattitudesof
theslavesandservantswoulddependonthevillagetheylivedin.Iftheylivedinavillagewhere
peopleinlowcastescouldnotparticipate,theymayfeelenragedandprotest.

MerchantsandArtisans
Merchantswouldmostlikelybeexcited.Theywouldpracticetheir
musicalskills(iftheypossessedthem)forabetterchancetobechosen.IfanyArtisandecides
thattheywouldratherbetheGriotthancarvethemasksandinstrumentsforthem,thenthey
maytryout.

Griots
Typically,theexistingGriotwouldpasstheroleontohisorhersonordaughter,and
thefamilywouldteachthemthestoriesandhowtoplaythekoraandotherinstruments.Since
thisvillagesGriothasnochildren,hewillmentorthenewGriot.

NobilityandRoyalty
ThenoblesandroyalfamilywouldsponsortheeventandhelptheGriot
inchoosinganewone.Theywouldtakeprideindoingso,becausetheGriotisoneofthemost
importantroles(thevillagehistorianandstoryteller)tohaveinavillageandisoftenconsidered
partofthenobleclass.ChoosingtheGriotwouldbeagreathonor.
