The activity today targets the following learning objectives in the H2 Biology syllabus, particularly the

mechanisms in bold:
4(i)
4(j)
4(f)

Describe the functions of common proto-oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes (limited
to ras and p53) and explain how loss of function mutation and gain of function mutation can
contribute to cancer.
Describe the development of cancer as a multi-step process.
Define control elements and explain how control elements (e.g. promoter, silencer and
enhancers) and other factors (e.g. transcription factors, repressors, histone modification
and DNA methylation) influence transcription.

There are two components in this activity.

The first component requires you to access Mastering Biology, read Pg. 421-429 of Campell, 10 th edition
online e-textbook (Pg. 421-429 of Campbell, 10th edition) and complete the activity and tutorial on control
of gene expression under HBL. This component consists of 12 marks.
The second component requires you to complete a case-study on Cancer using relevant readings and
videos. You will be required to answer some MCQs and structured questions. This component consists of
18 marks.
The HBL activity should take about an hour inclusive of all the readings and videos. Thereafter, please
complete the 2015 JC1 HBL Feedback.
Please note that HBL components will contribute to 5% of your overall grade.
