big wigs are going into overdrive to undermine left wing MP Jeremy Corbyns campaign to become Labour leader. Ex prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are calling for anyone but Corbyn. But their claims that Jeremy Corbyn would make Labour unelectable ring hollow in the wake of Ed Milibands electoral disaster last May. Corbyn is popular because hes been prepared to challenge austerity, rather than ape Tory policies. This week he called on his supporters to join the TUC demo against austerity and for workers rights at the Tory Party conference in Manchester on 4 October.
Tory
We face a Tory government that wants
the cuts to continue for five more years.
Theyve raised the idea of boot camps
for the young unemployed.
They are attacking our right to organise
with the new Trade Union Bill. Alongside the right wing press they are stirring up racism by scapegoating migrants.
Someone needs to lead a serious
fightback against Cameron and Co and the hundreds who are packing into
The National Gallery strike has won solidarity across the movement
Jeremy Corbyns meetings are hoping he
might do the job. It would be a big step forward for our side if Corbyn wins. But even if he does we cant wait until the next election to resist the Tories. We need a mass turn out at the Tory Party conference and a huge demo against the Trade Union Bill on 2 November (called by the TUC).
Migrants
We also need to resist the attempt
to scapegoat migrants around the crisis at Calais. Its not migrants that are cutting living standards its the Tories and the bosses.
And we need to get behind workers
fighting back like the all out strike at Londons National Gallery against privatisation, the action at the National Museum of Wales and the strikes planned by workers at First Great Western and London Underground next week.
Mass
But in the end we will need the kind
of mass strikes that could halt the Tory attacks for good. We should all celebrate if Jeremy Corbyn wins. But the Tories are on the offensive now and we need resistance now to stop them.
