Ammonia plant production depends heavily on the avoidance of carbon formation in the
steam reformer, proper flow distribution in catalytic reactors, and protection of catalyst and
equipment. Precise temperature monitoring through the ammonia process(reforming,
conversion, purification and methanation) is key to yield and purity.

Methanol Converters

The prereformer acts as a guard bed for the steam methane reformer. The prereforming catalyst
is easily poisoned by sulfur and protects the primary reformer tubes from overheating due to
catalyst deactivation by sulfur poisoning. Daily Thermetrics has developed patented Plenary
technology, utilizing CatTracker systems to effectively monitor vertical and horizontal catalyst
poisoning (FIG 1).

Tube Skin Thermometry

Large-scale steam reformers are vulnerable to over-firing, especially during plant transient
conditions. Tube skin thermocouples in the severe, double-fired heaters of SMRs commonly
exhibit poor reliability and shortened service life. Daily Thermetrics engineering team provides

critical temperature systems.

Even when properly implemented, reformer tube skin temperature

instrumentation can lag during normal operation, and this lack of
relevant information, can cause inefficient operation and costly
equipment failures. Daily Thermetrics has partnered with Johnson
Matthey to offer the patented CatTracker system which allows
operators to accurately measure process gas temperatures at
multiple elevations INSIDE catalyst tubes (FIG 2).
