Hands-On Exercise #1: Steve01 Simulation for Lake Washington TP

Lake Washington, a beautiful lake located in Seattle (WA) has the following general
characteristics:
volume = 2.9109 m3
mean depth = 33 m
inflow = outflow = 1.25109 m3/yr
In the 1950s and 1960s it began to deteriorate because of increased loadings of the nutrient
phosphorus. As a consequence, in the late 1960s, sewage inputs were greatly curtailed. The
loadings from 1930 through the late 1970s are summarized as inflow concentrations in the
following table:

Use Steve01.xls to simulate the lake's response from 1930 through 2000. On the Steve01
worksheet, go to cell B9 and enter the path to a proper directory on your computer. Change the
saved file name (cell B8 on the Steve01 Worksheet) to HO1XXX, where XXX are your initials.
Click on the Run button. Steve01 will begin to execute. Set the initial condition in 1930 at 17.4
g/L. In addition, total phosphorus does not decay (k = 0) but it does settle. Total phosphorus
settles at a rate that ranges from about 5 to 50 m/yr. Assume 10 m/yr as a starting value for the
settling velocity. Adjust the settling velocity until you get a good fit for the peak phosphorus
concentration.
