ASSIGNMENT NO. 2 CE-405-HYDROLOGY DR. A.

NAVID October 2010

NAME: CLASS # REGISTRATION # SECTION

1. Trace the watershed for Jesse Creek discharge at Point f, just above where it enters the Rose River. Find the drainage
area in Acres if the scale of the drawing is 1:12000

2. You are asked to design a 3.0 Ac. parking lot for the new Toys R Us store at Albemarle County with a culvert that drains
the lot. If the time of concentration for the flow is 10 minutes, predict the design basis discharges for the 10-yr, 25-yr, 50-yr
and 100-yr storm. (IDF Curves are given as follows for Albemarle County, VA, USA)

3. What is the probability that the 25 year storm will occur in the next 25 years?

4. Folsom Reservoir has a capacity of 970,000 acre-feet of water. Assuming no additional input or loss, how
long would it take to drain Folsom Reservoir at a rate of 120,000 cfs? What is the significance of 120,000
cfs?
5. A lake has an area of 10 sq. km. During a specific month, the lake evaporation was 90 mm with the inflow to
the lake from a river was 1.2 m3/s and the outflow from the lake via another river was 1.1 m3/s. A water
level increase of 100 mm for the lake was also observed for the same month.
a) What was the precipitation in mm during that month?
b) What assumption is important for your answer in finding the precipitation?
c) The concentrations of phosphorus during that specific month were 1.0 mg/L and 0.8 mg/L in the inflow river
water and the outflow river water, respectively. What was the change of stored phosphorus (kg) in the lake
during the month?
6. Define the term “Watershed”. What other words are used for it? What are the parameters that affect the
surface runoff from a watershed?
7. Define the term “Stage” used in Hydrology with its different types.
8. What instruments are used for measuring flow velocity, precipitation, wind velocity, humidity, evaporation
and evapotranspiration?
9. Explain the term “Hydrological Data”. What are its sources and give practical applications of this data in
engineering fields.
10. Sketch a 3-D figure of Hydrological Cycle showing all terms associated with the cycle, e.g. abstractions
(losses), runoff, ground cover etc.
11. What is time of concentration? How it is calculated for Overland flow? Use the Rational Method to
determine the 25-yr design runoff in ft3/day from a new subdivision located in Albemarle County, Virginia,
USA having drainage characteristics as follows:
Catchment Area Runoff Time of concentration
Identifier (acres) Coefficient (min)
A1 5 0.4 20
A2 3 0.8 10
A3 4 0.5 15
A4 6 0.6 15
The rainfall intensity for the area based on the time of concentration is 2 in/hr. No shallow concentrated
flow was observed in the watershed.
12. Consider the annual flood data for Magra River, Italy, at Calamazza, 1930-1970 below. Find discharges for a
return period of 50 years using Gumbel and Log Pearson Type III Distributions.
