Representation

Within Our
Production
What is representation?
Representation
‘’Representation refers to the construction in any medium
(especially the mass media) of aspects of ‘reality’ such as
people, places, objects, events, cultural identities and other
abstract concepts. Such representations may be in speech
or writing as well as still or moving pictures.’’

Representation can be as easy as making a

character wear a bow tie, because of the schema
that a bow tie possess, whether it be
wealth/prestige/status etc.
Representation: Characters
Glyn; His character was reasonably easy to
create. Glyn is playing a teenager. We needed
to ensure that he needed to look like an
average teenager. We dressed him in black
skinny jeans/black cardigan/checkered shirt
as not to draw the attention away from
his surroundings, and so that there
is more of a contrast between him
and the party around him.
Rob; He is wearing a mask which implies mystery, the
character perhaps hiding behind this mask. He is wearing
a suit which reflects his high status and power. Rob’s
character is also reluctant to join in with the other
character, showing that he is just watching them, as if
they are performing for him? Rob also holds a toast, and
the fact that everybody follows suit again shows his
power. The mask we happen to choose has an evil grin,
this mask is the only expression that he shows, meaning
that it’s the only expression that we link with him,
showing that he is in fact a bad person.
Theo; like Rob, is wearing a mask. Again showing that
he is hiding his identity. Theo’s use of the prop
(umbrella) is unusual. We decided to make the
audience uneasy we would contradict people’s schema.
So in this case we gave Theo, a very masculine
character, a floral old fashioned umbrella, showing his
contrasting alter-egos.
Theo also wears a hat, again
covering his hair, something
that would make him
identifiable. Showing that he is
hiding his identity. Normally a
person only hides their identity
if they have done something
wrong, something that they are
running away from.
