BEACH CLEAN UP!

All of sixth class went
to Redbarn beach on
the 18th of September. Before we went a
woman called Sandy
came into our class
and gave us a presentation about the sea
and all shells. Then we
went on the bus to
Redbarn. We went on
the beach and our
class played games
first and Miss Edmonds class cleaned
the beach. We got
nicknames that were
connected to nature.
After that we were

looking for seashells

and different types
of seaweed. Eoghan
found Kelp. It looked
like a big hand.
Then we cleaned the
beach. There were six
groups and everyone
had a job. There was
a captain, a vicecaptain and helpers.

There was a small
competition about
who could find the
oldest rubbish.
Somebody found

We looked for cans,

got to school we got to

SCHOOL CLOSURES

A FEW WORDS FROM MR. ONEILL

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The weather has been great for

the months of September and
especially October. Hopefully it
will last for the break and it will
help to shorten the winter. As
the evenings and mornings get
darker the Halloween break cant
be far behind. It is time to make
the Barm brack and to start to
carve the pumpkins! At the moment we are busy organising our
annual Witches Walk, which is
our major fundraiser for the
year. This year the money collected will help towards the
funding for the computer room
and towards the maintenance of
the computers. Once again I wish
to thank everyone in advance for
their generosity in supporting the
school. It is gratefully appreciated.
We have been very busy this
term celebrating all of the sporting successes achieved by our
pupils and also celebrating football, rugby and camogie successes
outside of the school. The boys
and girls have been playing football matches and both teams had
very good league campaigns. The

girls are through to the semifinals as we speak. The boys were

not so lucky. There may be another Sciath na Scol football final if things go well for the girls.
We had a huge haul of medals at
the cross-country running finals
at Conna. Congratulations to everyone who took part in all of
these events and who participated so well in these events.
Many thanks to all the teachers
who help with the teams and who
cover classes when the teams are
playing. A big thank you to the
G.A.A. Craobh Eochaill, for all of
their help and support and also
the soccer club for their coaching.
I want to ask parents to be conscious of leaving space for the
buses to park safely at the
school. Please do not park in
front of the gates and leave the
disability parking spaces clear.
I would like to thank all the
SNAs and the teachers who are
doing extra-curricular activities
with the pupils. Also the Parents
Association for the cookery
classes which are in full swing
too. Maith sibh ar fad.

All the classes are getting busy

with preparations for Christmas
pageants and
the older pupils are going
through rehearsals for their
plays which we are putting on before the Christmas break. That
is something to look forward to.
As you are aware a new Parents
Association have been elected
for the school and at the moment
we are in the process of electing
a new Board of Management too.
I want to take this opportunity
to thank all the volunteers on
both bodies, who give their support and help to the school .
I wish Ms. Hickey a very comfortable maternity leave and I
send my best wishes to Ms. Fitzgerald and her new baby girl, Ella!
Gum gach rath oraibh ar fad.
Enjoy the break and be safe as
the mornings and evenings are
very dark. Wear light coloured
clothing and preferably a high
visibility vest when you are outside and it is dark. Sln agus
beannacht.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION NEWS

The Parents Association would

like to welcome all the staff and
children old and new back for the
new school year.
The much loved Witches Walk
will take place weather permitting
on Friday October 23rd.
Due to the much anticipated
Christmas concerts this year the
hall will be unavailable for the

Page 2

cake sale before Christmas, a new

date will be arranged for the new
year.
Cooking classes also continue this
year but also due to the Christmas concerts, at a reduced level
until the new year.
Our newest initiative the collection of good condition uniforms
was a great success in June and

uniforms which were not sold

were donated to the local SVP.
All funds raised this year will be
put towards information technology and we would like to take this
opportunity to thank everyone
for their continued support.
Finally happy Halloween and have
a lovely midterm break.

CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On the 25th of September
2015 children from our
school went to the East Cork
Cross Country in Conna.
When we got there, there
were lots of different
schools. We put all of our
bags in a circle. Then we
warmed up by doing exercises. Then the teachers
showed us around the place.
The 2009s raced first, then
the 2008s raced. Then the
2007s and the 2006s were

the final people that had one

lap. 2005s to 2002s had two
laps. At the end of the race
everybody got chocolate
milk. Some of the parents
came to support the children. First to third got to
stand on a box. The children
that came first, second and
third got to take a picture
and got a magazine. Everybody took a picture before
we went back on the bus.
The people that came in the

top six were Ami Moosi,

James Coyne, Sorcha Kilgannon, Alex Cashman, Avril
Cashman, Sean ORiordan and
Wit Gorniak. We returned
with eighteen medals.

SCIATH NA SCOL 2015

Our first game was against Rathcormac and we played in Youghal. Our captain was Avril Cashman and our team
goalie was Ellie Atkinson The final
score was 1-4 to 0-5 to Bunscoil
Mhuire. Our second match was away in
Glanmire against Scoil na ng.. The
final score was 1-5 to 1-0 to Bunscoil
Mhuire. We had another away match
against Belgooley. The score was 3-1
to 1-4 to Bunscoil Mhuire. We had an-

other game at home against Gaelscoil,

Midleton. The final score was 1-6 to
nothing to Bunscoil Mhuire. Our next
match was a semi-final, we were playing a team from Cork called Ovens N.S.
It was at home. Our team captain was
Cassie Irwin and our vice captain was
Avril Cashman. The girls played very
strongly but sadly Ovens were
stronger. The final score was 0-3 to 52 to Ovens. Thanks to Mr. Walsh for

refereeing our away games and special

thanks to Ms. Carroll and Ms. Llewellyn
for coaching us and getting us to the
semi-final. We had a great time and
well miss playing football next year

THE WALTER VERLING ART EXHIBITION

A group of students from Bunscoil

Mhuire visited the Walter Verling

Art Exhibition on September the
23rd. The artist was there to
meet us. We were allowed to examine and touch the paintings.
There were lots of interesting local scenes. We were allowed to
make our own drawings with the
artists help. My favourite painting
was the apples. It looked like you
could eat it!

WE GOT A GREAT NEW GO-KART!

On Friday, 4th September a very

nice man called Pat from Toymaster
in Youghal arrived at our classroom
with a special surprise. The Berg toy
company had decided to donate one
of their fantastic go-karts to our
class. As Pat is their local agent, he
very kindly offered to deliver it. We
were so excited when we saw the gokart. It is bright orange and has two
big white eyes on the front. It is

just the right size for us. We love to

take turns on it outside in the basketball court. At the moment we are
learning how to steer and it's harder
than it looks. We have had a few
near misses but will keep practising
our driving skills. We would also like
to say a huge thank you to Luke's
Granny Janet Patterson who bought
us a giant beanbag to relax on during
story time. Thank you for being so

kind Janet. We absolutely love our

new beanbag!

SOME GOOD ADVICE FROM JACK KEANE!

A good place for my dog Annie

is in her kennel for Halloween
because there wont be any
monsters to scare her. She will
feel safe there. Animals can
get scared of fireworks because they make a loud bang.
They might run around in circles scared. They might dig

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 1

holes to hide in like moles do.

People might get worried if
they cant find their pets. People must promise to keep their
dogs in their kennels. If you
have a Nana you could ask her
to keep your cat in her sitting
room. Make sure you keep them
off the window sills because

they could see someone

dressed up as monsters and
they might run away and hide.

STAYING SAFE FOR HALLOWEEN

1. When you are out

Trick or Treating always
bring an adult with you.

2. Make sure your bag has

no holes or you will lose all
of your goodies.

5. Dont go near bonfires.

6. Stay away from fireworks when people set
them off.

3.Always walk on the footpath and never on the

road.

7. If you are wearing a

dark costume make sure
you wear reflective bands
so cars can see you when
they are passing.

4. Bring a torch with you

to see where you are going
in the dark.

8. Make sure you keep

your pets indoors, pets can
get frightened when they

see all the people dressed

up and when they hear lots
of noise.
9. Run away from Monsters!!!
10. The most important
rule of all
at Halloween is to
HAVE
FUN!!!

RUGBY WORLD CUP REPORT WITH RYAN AND CONOR

The 2015 Rugby World Cup is being hosted
in England this year. There are twenty
teams in total taking part in the World Cup.
All the six nations are taking part, including
Ireland. The tournament started on the
18th of September 2015, when England
played Fiji at Twickenham for the Rugby
World Cup opening match. The final score
was 26-12 to England.
There are four pools and five teams per
pool. Ireland were in pool D. In the pool
stages, we played Romania, Canada and
France. We won all of our pool matches and

made it to the quarter final against Argentina on Sunday the 18th of October.
Argentina dominated Ireland with two early
tries in the first half and even though Ireland fought back in the second half, bringing the score to 20-23, Argentina unfortunately got another two tries. The game
ended 20-43 to Argentina. We were very
disappointed. Not having our best players
and our Captain Paul OConnell hit us hard
but we are still so proud of Luke Fitzgerald,
Ian Madigan and all the team members who
played for Ireland over all the matches.

Our favourite players on the Irish team are

Keith Earls, Dave Kearney and Robbie Henshaw.
Obviously we would have loved Ireland to
win the World Cup but now
wed like to see Australia
play South Africa in the
final instead.

OUR FIRST TERM IN JUNIOR INFANTS!

We have had a GREAT time in Junior

Infants so far. We have been learning
lots of different things. We have been
counting, sorting and making patterns.
We have been learning our sounds and
we can even read some words already!
One of our favourite times in school is
when we get to do our art. When we
were doing our sea creatures especially,
said Risn. The decorating was really
FUN. I stuck decorations on the picture and I had lots of fun with the
stickers, said Charly. I liked painting
the trees, we got to use our fingers,
said Luke.
Remember when we were cutting out
the pictures, said Lexie. I liked doing
the cutting, added Cormac. It was
really fun when we were colouring, said

Ella. I like playing games and with toys,

especially Lego, said Beth. I built a
house all by myself. I like Lego and
cutting, said Kyle.

(By Ms OLearys Junior Infants)

I love playing in the yard because its
fun and I like free writing, said Sam.
I love the computer room that we are in
at the moment and I like going out to
play with my friends including Cillian and
Sam, said Thomas Sharkey. I love playing with my friends Lylah, Elise and Natalia. I love playing sisters with them. I
play the little sister, I get spoiled! said
Tori Power. I love Ms. Kearney. I like
other things like her computer, Lylah
Heaphy. I love school but I dont know
why. Maybe its because I like playing in

the yard, said Cillian Murphy.

(Ms. Kearneys Junior Infants)

We like when we get to wear our tracksuits. We like to play with our friends.
We love to sing and listen to music. We
love eating lunch too! We really like just
walking around and we really like our
teacher too. We like our work but only
when its colouring, not writing.

AVRIL CASHMAN WINS THE MOBY DICK KIDATHLON!

On Saturday there was a Kidathlon on in Youghal. It was on
at 10:00am. At 10:00. We went
onto the beach and started the
race. We had to swim 250m,
cycle 4km and run 2km. Everyone ran into the water. It was
very cold and choppy. When I
came out of the swim I was

really tired. When I got on my

bike I didnt feel tired any
more but I still had a long way
to go. There was so many people there cheering you on.
When I finished cycling I left
my bike in transition and I left
for my run. The run was really
long. When I finished I was so

tired. I got a medal when I finished and they told me I came

first. I was so surprised.

BOYS SCIATH NA SCOL MATCH REPORTS

In the boys Sciath na Scol. We played

Rathcormac, Scoil na ng, Belgooly and
Gaelscoil Midleton. We played Rathcormac
and the score was 3-6 2-3 to us. The
first goal was scored by Cillian O Connell
and he also got a point. Then Jack Corcoran got the second goal along with the
third coming from Conor Savage (vice
captain) but they almost came back at us
but we held onto the lead. Our second
game was against Scoil na ng and again
Cillian O Connell got an early goal. But
Scoil na ng came back with four goals

VOLUME 10, ISSUE 1

and a few points. At half time we got a

good team talk but we couldnt come back.
We lost 4-5 1-4.Then we played Belgooly. We were off to a good start with
Cillian O Connell scoring a goal. But during
that half we had a lot of goal chances
including a goal from Chris Brophy that
didnt count. I had a lot of chances myself
but I couldnt hit the net. At half time it
was a close match. In the second half we
got a goal from Conor o She. The two
midfields were Sen Riordan and Sen
Fitzgerald who boosted us on from the

midfield but then I missed a penalty and

we came up short. After the loss we tried
to qualify for the semi-final but we had
to win but nothing went to plan and we
lost 3-9 0-1.
