PROBABILITY

The most important thing to remember in the Probability unit

is when to multiply and when to add.

For Independent Events (Events that do not affect one
another)

For Mutually Exclusive Events (Events that do not overlap)

PROBABILITY DIAGRAMS

Probability Grids
When two things are done, to see all possibilities a
probability grid may be drawn.

PROBABILITY DIAGRAMS CONTD.

Tree Diagrams

Tree diagrams are used to organize information in probability
problems.

Draw a Tree Diagram showing all possibilities.

i) What is the probability that Jon walks and is late?

ii) What is the probability that Jon takes a cab and is late?

iii) What is the probability that Jon is late?

CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY (In Tree Diagrams)

Conditional Probability is the probability that something
happens giving or knowing that something else has
happened.

iv) What is the probability that Jon is late, given he walked to
school?

However, the question below is more difficult.

v) What is the probability that Jon walked, given that he was
late for school.

Conditional Probability (Contd.)

v) (contd.)

VENN DIAGRAM PROBABILITY
Look at an example of a Venn Diagram question below.

i) Find the probability of picking a student who studies
French.

ii) Find the probability of picking two students who study
Spanish only.
