D. Discussing new Let’s go back to our example, which do you think is an example of
concepts and dependent events?
practicing new skills Two events are dependent if the occurrence of the first event does affect
#1 (EXPLAIN) the occurrence of the other events.
In simple words, dependent events have influence or effect on the result
of the second event.
For example, we pick a ball in the box and didn’t return it, and then we
randomly pick another ball. Is it dependent or not?
Examples:
1. drawing a King of hearts and a Queen of hearts from a
standard deck of cards if no replacement of the first card is
done
2. Getting into a traffic accident is dependent upon driving or riding
in a vehicle.
3. If you park your vehicle illegally, you're more likely to get a
parking ticket.
4. You must buy a lottery ticket to have a chance at winning; your
odds of winning are increased if you buy more than one ticket
5. Not paying your power bill on time and having your power cut
off.
6. Being the first person to enter a movie theater and finding a good
seat.
7. Buying a lottery ticket every day for 100 days and winning the
lottery.

Getting the Probability of Dependent Events

If two events, A and B, are dependent, then the probability of both
events occurring is the product of the probability of A and the probability
of B after A occurs.
In symbols, 𝑃(𝐴 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐵) = 𝑃(𝐴) ⋅ 𝑃(𝐵 𝑓𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐴)

concepts and
practicing new skills
#2
Example 1
A box contains 7 white marbles and 7 red marbles. What is the probability
of drawing 2 white marbles and 1 red marble in succession without
replacement?
What is the probability of getting 2 white marbles and 1 red
marble?
7 6 7 7
𝑃(1𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒, 1𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑡𝑒, 1𝑟𝑒𝑑) = ⋅ ⋅ =

Example 2
A juggler has seven red, five green, and four blue balls. During his stunt,
he accidentally drops a ball and doesn't pick it up. As he continues,
another ball falls down. What is the probability that the first ball that was
dropped is blue, and the second ball is green?

Example 3
Mrs. Andrews has to select two students from 35 girls and 15 boys to be
part of a club. What is the probability that both students are girls?

Example 4
Joseph and David are playing a game of cards. Joseph drew a card at
random without replacement. He asks David to help him determine the
probability that the first card drawn was a queen and the second is a king.
Pair Activity.
1. A box of chocolates contains 10 milk chocolates, 8 dark chocolates,
and 6 white chocolates. Clyden randomly chooses a chocolate, eat it,
and then randomly chooses another chocolate. What is the
probability that Clyden chooses a milk chocolate and a dark
chocolate?
F. Developing mastery 2. In a newly bought 8-crayon case, two colors are selected
(Leads to Mastery consecutively without replacement. What is the probability that the
and Formative colors selected are red and green?
