Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of combinatorics and probability.

Performance Standard: The learner is able to use precise counting technique and probability in formulating conclusions and making decisions.
Learning Competency:

The learner illustrates events, and union and intersection of events.

At the end of this lesson, the learners will be able to;

Direction: The teacher calls out a color and a body part. Students must find an object in the room that has that
color and then touch the object with the selected body part. For example, if the teacher calls out “red nose”
students need to find an object that is red and touch it with their nose. The teacher continues calling colors and
body parts.

1. Activity Direction: The learners will arrange the letter tiles to create a word that is related to the topic. They will then post it on the board.
2. Analysis After the activity, the learners will answer the following questions:

3. Abstraction PROBABILITY OF MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE AND NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE EVENTS

Definition of terms:

Compound event- consists of two or more simple events that are connected by the word and or or.

Mutually Exclusive- if two events cannot occur at the same time. These events have no common elements. They are also called
disjoint events.

Not Mutually Exclusive- if two events can occur at the same time. These events have common elements. They are also called
inclusive events.

Probability of Mutually Exclusive Events

If two events, A and B, are mutually exclusive, then the probability that either A or B occurs is the sum of their probabilities.

In symbols,

P(A or B)= P(A∪B)= P(A)+P(B)


Using the Venn diagram, we have,

P(A or B)

Example 1. A bag contains 4 blue marbles, 8 green marbles and 6 red marbles. Carlo draws one ball at random. What is the
probability that the marble is either red or green?

Solution: A ball cannot be both red and green, so these are mutually exclusive events.

P(red or green)= P(red)+P(green)

∴The probability that the drawn marble is either red or green is

Example 2. A card is drawn at random from a standard deck of 52 cards. What is the probability of drawing an ace, a 10 or a king?

Solution: the three events are mutually exclusive since you cannot draw a card that is an ace, a 10 and a king at the same time.
Thus,

P(ace or 10 or king)= P(ace)+P(10)+P(king)

4. Application GROUP WORK


Direction: Divide the class into 5 groups. Each group will be given 1 problem to solve and choose 1 among the
members to explain. Finds the probability of the problem below. Let the students analyse and solve the problem.

1. Find the probability of event of getting a 5 and the event of getting a number divisible by 3 from the set
{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14}.
