Vibrating Screens

Introduction to Osborn Screens

Osborn has the largest range of mining
screens available in the market. Osborns
experience in screen design and manufacture
goes back to the 1940s. During this time
Osborn has continuously improved and
developed their screen range to suit all the
demanding conditions of the mining and
quarrying industries.
All vibrating screens are designed and
manufactured in South Africa at Osborns
modern facilities in Elandsfontein. Osborn
utilises the latest design technology combined
with FEA design analysis.

G forces are very important in screen selection 5 Gs is considered the norm in South Africa. The bigger the screen aperture the higher the machine stroke.
Thus the speed will decrease. On fine apertures high speed with a small stroke is required. G force is calculated as stroke multiplied by speed.

The Osborn OBEX screen was developed as a replacement for the older shaft
driven series. The main features are lower power consumption, low operating
noise and easy maintenance. OBEX screens can be used for conventional
screening, dewatering and washing applications.
Osborns OBEX screens are supplied with polyurethane screen panel decks as a
standard, but can be fitted with woven wire decks if required.
Two vibrating out of balance motors rotate in opposite directions, synchronising
and imparting a vibrating force in a longitudinal direction. This lifts the material and
carries it forward on each rotation providing a partical travel rate. The amplitude
can be varied by adjusting the out of balance weights on the vibrating motors to
the required stroke.
The frequency depends on the use of either 4 pole or 6 pole motors as dictated by the application. When dewatering on a 5 upslope, the use of a
variable speed drive VSD is recommended to achieve optimal speed and performance.

The Osborn SUPERKING screens are frequently used in

primary screening and scalping operations and have proved to
be exceptionally reliable in the mining and quarrying industries.
Generally operating at 16 to 20 installation angle, the
SUPERKING produces a maximum of 12 mm stroke at around
5Gs.

NOTES
For sizes not listed here please consult Osborn. Where dual (2 drives) are
shown it indicates a twin drive mechanism timed by a toothed belt for heavy duty
applications.

The drive is a self contained vibrator unit complete with a heavy

duty steel shaft and fitted with grease lubricated self aligning
spherical roller bearings. The unit is completely enclosed and
dust tight.
To ensure that the feed material spreads across the full width
of the screen deck, the SUPERKING screens are fitted with
screen feed boxes as standard.
The Osborn SUPERKING screens are supplied with woven wire
screen decks as a standard but can be fitted with polyurethane
screen panels if required.

Osborn Exciter Driven Screens

This linear motion screen is generally regarded as a high speed,

versus the more conventional horizontal and declined models. It

is available in single deck & double deck configuration.

8 x 18 (2440 mm x 5490 mm)

The unbalanced Exciter Drive, designed and manufactured in

10 x 18 (3050 mm x 5490 mm)

SA, consists of a sturdy soundproof housing which contains two

10 x 20 (3050 mm x 6100 mm)

shafts that are synchronised with gears and mounted in heavy

10 x 22 (3050 mm x 6710 mm)

duty roller bearings. Lubrication of the bearings and gears is

12 x 24 (3660 mm x 7320 mm)

achieved by a combination of an oil bath and an oil mist.

12 x 26 (3660 mm x 7930 mm)

Eccentric weights are attached to both ends of the shaft. While

exciter drive force and the oscillation amplitude of the vibratory
equipment.

OSBORN EXCITER DRIVEN MULTI SLOPE TYPE SCREENS

The Multi Slope Type Screen with the Exciter Drive is made up

of two, three or five decks that are installed at different angles.

8 x 18 (2440 mm x 5490 mm)

The Exciter Drive gearbox is mounted over the top of the screen

Used extensively in the coal and diamond processing industry,

the Osborn Multi Slope Type Screen has the capability of handling

Osborn Linear Screens

Where accurate and efficient screening is required, the Osborn Linear

Twin shafts, driven through wide face helical gears, are completely
enclosed in a dust proof housing which contains a large oil reservoir to

WIDE-FACE HELICAL GEARS

Timing gears are premium-quality, single
helical design, precision-cut from 4140
heat-treated steel. Wide-faced gear teeth
distribute load much more effectively
than spur gears, and promote smooth,
quiet, long-lived operation under heavy
loading.
VIBRATING SHAFTS
Each tough, eccentric, vibrator shaft is precision-machined from
1045 steel for extra-long service.

OIL FLINGER

OIL-SPLASH LUBRICATION
Through-flow, oil splash system provides superior
lubrication of gears and bearings. Large oil
reservoir, extending the entire length of vibrator
housing, dissipates heat rapidly, and lowers bearing
temperatures for longer bearing service life.

DOUBLE-LIP SEAL
Retains oil and prevents contaminants from
entering vibrator mechanism. Seals and seal
sleeve are easily replaceable when worn.

Osborn Mogensen Sizer

The Osborn Mogensen Sizer is made up of several screening decks which are arranged on top of one another and have different inclinations.
The meshes are bigger in the upper decks and smaller in the lower decks. The maintenance-friendly screen mesh is excited in a compact case
by out of balance motor vibrators. While the finer particles of the material fall through the larger meshes of the upper deck almost vertically,
the larger particles are filtered out of the material flow. Due to the different inclinations of the screen media, their openings have the effect of
a smaller aperture. For this reason, the mesh widths can be unusually large compared to conventional flat-screens at the same separation
efficiency. The separation of different particle sizes from the material
flow and the larger mesh width not only prevent the deposition of
material layers and clogging of material on the screen surface, but
also ensure a high throughput. The sizer is fully dust enclosed with a
sealed outlet and inlet.

Osborn Spreader Feeder

Designed to accept a fast material flow from a relatively narrow feed and convert this into a low velocity and uniform flow across the width
of the machine. The Osborn Spreader Feeder is highly recommended for this process.
These feeders are capable of handling a wide range of products including materials such as damp clay and limestone; and are ruggedly built
for arduous trouble free service. There are two types of Osborn spreader feeders. These are:

TRANSVERSE FEEDER
The transverse feeder is available in four sizes being suitable for
feeding the 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3 meter wide sizers and screens. They
are suitable for accepting a feed and turning through 90 degrees
into a steady and continuous flow across the width of the screen
feed plate. Occasionally they can be supplied to feed two machines
mounted in parallel.

CENTRAL FEEDER
The central feeder again is available in four sizes suitable for feeding
the 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 3 meter wide sizers and screens. They accept
a central feed and spread the material sideways in two directions
across the width of the screen feed plate.
