Course Description:
The short course will deal with the specific hazardous weather to aviation and how this
affects aerodromes and aircrafts. This information will help in flight planning and enable
more efficient operations at an airport.

This course will be particularly helpful to personnel whose daily operations are affected
by the weather: Private and commercial pilots, air traffic controllers, aeronautical
meteorological personnel and ground staff working outside on the apron at an airport
might find this information very useful in their scope of work.

Course Content:
Introduction to competencies required by the International Civil Aviation
Authority for Aeronautical Meteorological Personnel.
The hazard that cumulonimbus clouds and thunderstorms pose to aviation.
The hazard that low cloud and poor visibility such as fog, mist, haze smoke,
sand and dust storms, heavy rain and volcanic ash pose to aviation.
The hazard that aircraft icing poses to aviation.
The hazard that aircraft turbulence - CAT, mountain waves, gravity waves,
mechanical, orographic, wake turbulence and convective turbulence and
micro bursts poses to aviation.

VFR and IFR flight rules.


Types of aeronautical forecasts issued at an airport.
Aeronautical warning information available to pilots and ground staff at an
airport (SIGMET/AIRMET/Aerodrome warnings).
Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs).
Take off forecast.
Meteorological Aerodrome and Special Reports (METARs)
Sig weather charts for en route flying weather.
