Part-II:Technical Details
1. Introduction
Indian economy is growingrobust with an accelerated emphasis on agricultural
production. The development of new technologies in agriculture gives usgreat hope for having a
required growth rate of above 5 per cent. Despite this considerate fact, mere improvement in
technology will not lead to increased agricultural production unlesshigher adoption of the
technologies through effective commercialization is implemented. No doubt, the think tanks
ofICAR Institutes and State Agricultural Universities in India are doing great service by way of

developing innovative technologies, high yielding crop varieties and hybrids, farm implements

Tr
ia

and machineries, post harvest value additions and food processing. But, the mind set of either the
scientist or the stake holder (the farmer) seems to have not promoted the required transformation
aiming a business outlook to the traditional agriculture. Even at this dawn of high end

io

information era, wherein, every mobile holder in this country could have access to any

ud

information within moments; and globalized agribusiness opportunities, the farmers are still
deprived of modern technologies, managerialperspectives and market linkages. In addition, they

St

also lack institutional support and handholding. Sometimes, with their experiential learning
farmers also become innovators. But, such innovators need to be supported in a more scientific

way to promote their findings. In spite of the availability of technologies, institutional support

PD

and market linkages, still hurdles come in the way of poor fiscal support and insufficient
infrastructure to test verify the technology / innovation as a business venture. In short, a kind of

sk

one stop solution should always be available, more specifically to the start ups in order to break
the hurdles; and to make challenges into opportunities. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has

de

a tryst with excellence and remained committed to creation, archiving and dissemination of
knowledge in agricultural science. Our mandate under ICAR-NAIP-BPD unitin the Directorate of
Agribusiness Development, TNAU was to promote knowledge management in agriculture and to
encourageagribusiness professionals with sound knowledge and skill, respect for profession,
social and national commitment. Since its establishment in the year 2009-10, the BPD Unitat
TNAU has created aconducive environment andplayed a crucial role in promoting a strong
business culture to the henceforth known traditional farming in this part of the country.

2. Overall Sub-project Objectives

Tocommercialize technologies and products developed by the University
To develop and promote entrepreneurship in the region through Agri Business Incubation
To undertake programs on capacity building with regard to technologies and managerial
aspects for establishing agribusiness
To contribute to competitiveness of agribusiness environment and job creation
3. Objective Wise Achievements
Committed to the mandate of knowledge management, BPD unit at TNAU has
successfully commercializedthe following technologies

3.1. Technologycommercialization

Tr
ia

3.1.4. Solar Crop Dryer (Tunnel type)

Tunnel type solar crop dryer has been developed by the Department of Agricultural
Processing, AEC&RI, TNAU, Coimbatore. The structure mainly consists of a semi-cylindrical
tunnel like structure made of Ultra Violet (UV) stabilized polyethylene sheet. The dryer is walkin type to facilitate loading and unloading of the product to be dried. The floor of the solar tunnel
dryer is constructed with cement concrete and lined with aspecial thick black polyethylene sheet.
This solar drier will have more absorbent surface for solar radiation and thereby increases the
temperature inside the dryer. The solar radiation is transmitted through UV collector sheet to
tunnel chamber. The actual working principle is based on green house effect. The polyethylene
cover will have the property of transferring short-wave radiation and opaque for long wave

Tr
ia

radiation. After reaching the absorbent surface, the shortwave radiation is converted into longwave thermal radiation and reflected back to the collector material. As UV polyethylene
collector is opaque for longwave radiation, heat trapped inside the dryer steadilyincreases the

io

temperature. Normally 15-20C increase over ambient temperature is achieved inside the solar

ud

crop dryer. Solar tunnel driers are in demand for drying Copra in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and

3. 1. 5. SRI Power Weeder

The SRI system of rice cultivation is very much popularin Tamil Nadu. One of the
important componentadvocated to enhance yield in SRI is thorough weeding by manually
operated cono-weeder. Farmers always find it difficult to operate the cono weeder. To ease the
operation, the Department of Farm Machinery, AEC&RI, TNAU has designed and developed
SRI power-weeder, the first of its kind in the country. The weeder has a novel provision of a
11

float for operating in all kinds of soft-puddled soils without sinking. There also exists a provision
for varying the operating width of row spacing from 20 to 30 cm.By this provision the
recommended space of 22.5 cmcould be effectively maintained for better performance.
Moreover, the weeder can cover two rows at a time. Fitted with 1.5 HP engine, the entire
machine weighs just 17 kg. By SRI power weeder one can cover 0.8 ha of paddy field in a day.
Currently, the machine is marketed in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tirupura,
Punjab, Orissa and Assam. International demand in countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Mali,
Senegal, Ghana, Zambia, Phillippines and Vietnam is also increasing. M/S Premier power
equipmentshas made a MOU for the manufacturing of SRI power weeder during 2010. Later,
this startup company has been taken over by M/S Briggs & Stratton, USA, an International

3.1.6. TNAU Stored Grain Insect Management Kit

de

Food grains are stored for varying periods to ensure proper and balanced public
distribution throughout the year. Among the biotic and abiotic factors which affect grains / seeds
in storage, insect plays a major role in the deterioration of the grains / seeds causing both
qualitative and quantitative losses. Often the presence of insects in store houses are felt only
when they are hovering and flying around, by which time enormous loss and population built up
of insects might have occurred. Obviously, timely detection of the stored grain insects will help
to prevent heavy losses. TNAU is one of the pioneering Institutes in India in the development of
detection devices for stored grain insects. These devices exploit the wandering behaviour of the
insects and help in timely detection of insects in stored produce for effective pest management.
The Department of Agricultural Entomology, Centre for Plant Protection Studies, TNAU,
12

Coimbatore has developed a kit for stored grain pest management and it is named as
TNAU-Stored Grain Insect Management Kit. The kit containsa set of prototypes of all the
devices along with a CD-Rom that envisages the features and uses of the devices. The kit will be
an ideal handson training tool for Education, Extension centers (KVK, Plant clinic, Save
Grain Centers) and also for Private Ware Housing. This TNAU kit is the first of its kind in the
world. M/S Melwin Engineering has made MOU for the manufacturing of this kit.

3.1.7. Minimal Processing of Banana Pseudostem

Consumption of vegetables in India is distressingly low when compared to most of the

PD

advanced countries. Promoting healthy diet and lifestyle to reduce the global burden of non
communicable and chronic diseases requires the consumption of adequate quantities of fruits and

sk

vegetables.Consumer demands for high quality food with fresh like and natural

de

characteristics that require only minimum efforts and time for preparing healthy meals had led to
the evolution and increased production of fresh cut fruits and vegetables. As a result, the market
demand for minimally processed or lightly processed fruits and vegetables has rapidly increased.
Minimal or lightly processed operations like washing, sorting, trimming, peeling, slicing, etc.,
that do not affect the freshness of the raw material and retain fresh-like sensory qualities and
consumer convenience. Preparation of banana pseudostem for cooking involves more drudgery
for working women and it cannot be stored after preparation. The product has immense market
potential, if it could be preserved for a reasonable time. Keeping in view of the above facts, the
technology for Preservation of Banana Pseudostem by Minimal Processing has been developed
in the Department of Food and Agricultural Process Engineering, Tamil Nadu Agricultural
13

University, Coimbatore. The minimally processed banana pseudostem retains the freshness and
good condition for a period of 7 days without any brown coloration.M/S V.S.Natural Food has
made an MoU for this technology.

3.1.8. TNAU Master Trap

io

This multipurpose device has been uniquely designed to include most known traps,

ud

serving as an all-in-one kit which could be used as a Light trap, Pheromone trap, Fly trap, Midge
trap, Sticky trap and Rat trap useful in Integrated Pest Management. It embodies a master frame

St

that encloses a master chamber to which accessories can be fitted from all sides so that the
attractant sources can be placed either inside or outside the master chamber to trap the pests. The

benefits include controlling flying insects and rodents. Extra-ordinary versatility and

Inter incubatee incubation is one of the highlighted activities of NAIP-BPD unit at

TNAU. So far ten start up incubatees have been interlinked for their business promotional

activities. This kind of facilitation is mutually beneficial for both the clients.

M/s Eco Green Unit is involved in the manufacture and sale of banana fibre based
products. The firm supplies machineries and inputs to Self Help Groups and purchases the
finished goods. Eco Green Unit was exploring the opportunity of designing and fabricating
banana fibre threading machine, as thread making demands most of the time and energy of the
craftsmen. BPD-TNAU has successfully facilitated the design and fabrication of banana fibre
threading machinethrough M/s Emral Tune Line Auto Tech Ind. who is yet another incubatee.
The machine designed was able to produce very fine threads of uniform quality. This simple
machine could also replace the workload of 7-10 persons at a time. Such a kind of interincubatee linkage has created business opportunities to both of them.

Case: 2
Product developed: Banana fibre extraction machine
Incubatees involved: 1. Mr. Melakkal P. M. Murugesan
2. M/S Emral Tune Line Auto Tech Ind.
Mr. P.M.Murugesan from Melakkal, Madurai is engaged in the manufacturing of banana
fibre based handicrafts. Normally he practices a manual method to extract the fibre from dried
banana sheath using a fine needle. The process is a cumber sum and also uniformity of the size
of fibre could not be maintained. Observing the practical difficulty, BPD unit at TNAU has
counseled Mr. Murugesan and M/S Emral Tune Line Auto Tech Ind. for an effective linkage.

4. Baseline Analysis
4.1. Incubator
At TNAU, a separate Directorate for Agri Business Development was started inthe
year2007 to initiate agribusinesspromotion, student entrepreneurship and consultancy services.
The formal concept of Business incubation was started in collaboration with ICRISAT,
Hyderabad during August2009. Later, under ABI the BPD unit has been established with the
financial assistance form NAIP-ICAR, New Delhi under component I during 2009. BPD unit is
the one stop solution for agribusiness aspirants to consolidate the efforts of TNAU to fulfill the

demands of agro industry, agripreneurs and other stake holders.

Tr
ia

At the time of initiation of the project no separate infrastructure, laboratory facility for
testing, logistic support for the clients and market networking was available. Whereas, over the
period of three years of implementation of the sub project, infra-structure worth of`17.56 Lakhs

St

Orbital Incubator Shaker, Centrifuge, Deep Freezer, Vortex Mixture , pH meter, Micro oven
have been made available for continuous usuage for the benefit of incubatees. In addition,

TNAU-BPD Unit has also created infrastructure facilities including in-house accommodation for

PD

start up business promotion (approximately 3000 sq.ft.), Laboratory, Training Hall, a Business
Discussion Room. A BPD office, a Common Business Centre with facilities like Desktop

computers, Laptops, Printers, PRI Card & 24 hrs Internet connectivity, 40 KVA Air cooled
Genset, Furniture and Lab Modular Tables for the agribusiness promotion of the clients.

de

A separate website viz., www.bpdtnau.org with integrated email access to the BPDTNAU unit and all the 55 incubatees have been created for effective communication, networking
and business promotion. A total no. of 6779 hits have been made on this website so far.The

4.2. Incubatees
An analytical study on the Farm business opportunities and challenges conducted by
the Directorate of Agribusiness Development, TNAU, Coimbatore during 2007 indicated that
majority of the farm business entrepreneurs or start ups had only limited scientific orientation,
achievement motivation, economic motivation, risk preference, self confidence, social
participation, information seeking and sharing behavior, mass media exposure, marketing ability
and managerial skills. In order to build up and create confidence among the entrepreneurs the
essentiality of agribusiness incubation was very much felt. As a blessing in disguise the Agri
Business Incubation (ABI) facility through NAIP-BPD unit was established in the year 2009.
Over three years (2009-2012) period of successful nurturing of agribusiness once again critical

Tr
ia

analysis of agribusiness incubation was taken up through a Ph.D research work viz., Indicators
of Agri-entrepreneurship and Evaluation of BPD unit - A diagnostic study submitted to Tamil
Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, India.

io

The study listed out certain indicators on agri entrepreneurship such as communication
index, leadership index, behavior index, pro-activeness index, level of education, marketing

ud

behavior and the managerial ability were found to be on the positive side and found to make

St

significant contribution for the development of agri entrepreneurship by the Incubation support
provided by the TNAU-BPD Unit. The impact analysis further showed that 8.57 per cent of the

incubatees realized that their income level had increased more than 20 per cent. Around 22.85

PD

per cent of the incubatees were of the opinion that TNAU-BPU unit had supported for an
increase in their level of income to the tune of 15-20% by hand holding. The growth in terms of
business turnover of selected incubatees from baseline to till date is also given in graphical form.

sk

Mentoring, handholding and performance monitoring of other incubatees is being continued. To

de

Address the socio economic and human resource development approximately 1,66,495 man days
of direct and indirect employment has been created through the implementation of this sub
project under NAIP Component I. Direct employment for about 5 to 10 persons in startup
business units and more than 20 people in case of medium scale business units could be
observed.
Indirect employment has been generated both in supply chain and value chain of the
clientale.Inter incubatee supports, joint ventures and tie-ups both national and international have
also been achieved substantially, which has increased the confidence level of the BPD unit at
TNAU towards accelerated continued growth.

10.1.Environmental Safeguard

10. Status on Environmental and Social Safeguard Framework

Any scientific advancement and technology transformation without addressing

sk

environmental issues, sustainable resource utilization, a human touch and a strong impact on
socio economic well being of a larger population in and around the region would be a wasteful

de

exercise. This sub-project has greatly acknowledged the following issues:

The promise on environmental safeguard due to the intervention of NAIP-BPD Unit

at TNAU in promoting environmentally safe and eco friendly organic agriculture in
this region seems to be very much impressive. The worthiness note is reflected
logically by the increased usage of bio-inputs produced by the incubatees for better
crop production.

43

The impact created by a few incubatees for bio-waste management through vermicomposting and mushroom growing by following TNAU technologies through NAIPBPD unit is yet another mile stone in environmental safeguard and sustainable
agricultural production in this zone.
The best and highly promising part of awareness creation is the conceptualization of
making value added handicrafts with banana fibre and areca spate by a couple of
incubatees. This kind of innovative wealth creation from waste material will have
greater impact seeking more such agricultural and xenobiotic wastes for positive

transformation and rural employment generation.

Tr
ia

A few incubatees engaged in raising nursery seedlings for large scale energy
plantations will have a strong futuristic impact in transforming waste and uncared

io

lands in to productive assets.

ud

10.2.Social Safeguard

St

Exemplified by its own incubation,TNAU-BPD Unit has enrolled 108 entrepreneurs

as its members and 55 incubatees within a short span of time and provided various

incubation and hand holding services to nurture agribusiness, more promisingly to

PD

transform farmers in to agripreneurs.

A strong platform has been created for easy access of University technologies under

sk

single window system, scientific validation of innovations through expert guidance,

de

assistance for patent filing, support for market information and linkage.
Skill oriented training, capacity building, management development programmes and
funding assistance through financial institutions are some of the other achievements
towards social safeguard. A total of 22Training and Workshops were conducted in
this sub-project for the benefit of nearly1045 persons.
Approximately1,66,495man days of direct and indirect employment has been created
through the implementation of this sub project under NAIP Component I.

44

11. Constraints, if any and Remedial Measures Taken

Despite the substantial achievements as per mandate, certain constraints were also faced
by NAIP -BPD Unit, TNAU, Coimbatore during the implementation of the sub-project which are
listed below :
Client servicing with a small team of scientific man power is always challenging,
and several times hindered our activities in facilitating the immediate needs of the
clients. Scientists from major faculties of agricultural sciencesexclusively dedicated

for implementing BPD activities and agribusiness incubation is proposed.

Tr
ia

Patent filling on behalf of the incubatees was facilitated through the Department of
Trade & Intellectual Properties, TNAU, Coimbatore. Clients felt that the procedures
are very much tedious and difficult. A separate wing in the BPD unit itself will help

io

to address the problems immediately and more systematically.

ud

As more and more awareness onagribusiness incubation has been created through

St

BPD unitTNAU, the time has come now to increase the infrastructurefacilities to
accommodate more number of incubatees for which continued financial support is

needed .

PD

In spite of the concept of working together on a win-win basis, royalty collection for
the technology transfer is always very tedious. Practical difficulties have been faced

sk

in tracking the sales of technology licensed companies. In most of the case, the

de

clients are not ready to spell out their exact business turn over every financial year.
No doubt, handholding and mentoring increase the level of confidence among the
agribusiness incubatees lack of proper financial support is always a problem. A kind
of venture capital support to be operated through the BPD units is needed
Although networking and sharing of technologies with other BPDs seem to be a
mandate, more openness and cooperation are solicited among the networking and
co-business partners respecting each other

45

11.1.Remedial Measures
Additional grant to create more infrastructural facilities to meet out the demands of
increasing number of entrepreneurs is requested.
The project should be extended to sustain, support and motivate the existing and new
entrepreneurs with an increased scientific and supporting manpower.Budget for the
purchase of separate vehicles for client servicing by the BPD Unit staff is also
requested during the extension of the project.
Angel investors / Venture Capitalists for Agribusiness sector should be identified,
mobilized and linked with the agripreneurs

Tr
ia

A separate monitoring cell has to be created to look into the adoption level of the
technology commercialized on a regular basis, to verify the production details of the
concerned entrepreneur and to collect the royalty in time.

The success stories of NAIP-BPD incubators and incubatees should be projected

io

through public and private mass media by letter or short video clippings in order to

de

sk

PD

St

ud

increase the level of confidence among new agribusiness aspirants.
