Part-II:Technical Details
1. Introduction
Indian economy is growingrobust with an accelerated emphasis on agricultural
production. The development of new technologies in agriculture gives usgreat hope for having a
required growth rate of above 5 per cent. Despite this considerate fact, mere improvement in
technology will not lead to increased agricultural production unlesshigher adoption of the
technologies through effective commercialization is implemented. No doubt, the think tanks
ofICAR Institutes and State Agricultural Universities in India are doing great service by way of
developing innovative technologies, high yielding crop varieties and hybrids, farm implements
Tr
ia
and machineries, post harvest value additions and food processing. But, the mind set of either the
scientist or the stake holder (the farmer) seems to have not promoted the required transformation
aiming a business outlook to the traditional agriculture. Even at this dawn of high end
io
information era, wherein, every mobile holder in this country could have access to any
ud
information within moments; and globalized agribusiness opportunities, the farmers are still
deprived of modern technologies, managerialperspectives and market linkages. In addition, they
St
also lack institutional support and handholding. Sometimes, with their experiential learning
farmers also become innovators. But, such innovators need to be supported in a more scientific
way to promote their findings. In spite of the availability of technologies, institutional support
PD
and market linkages, still hurdles come in the way of poor fiscal support and insufficient
infrastructure to test verify the technology / innovation as a business venture. In short, a kind of
sk
one stop solution should always be available, more specifically to the start ups in order to break
the hurdles; and to make challenges into opportunities. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has
de
a tryst with excellence and remained committed to creation, archiving and dissemination of
knowledge in agricultural science. Our mandate under ICAR-NAIP-BPD unitin the Directorate of
Agribusiness Development, TNAU was to promote knowledge management in agriculture and to
encourageagribusiness professionals with sound knowledge and skill, respect for profession,
social and national commitment. Since its establishment in the year 2009-10, the BPD Unitat
TNAU has created aconducive environment andplayed a crucial role in promoting a strong
business culture to the henceforth known traditional farming in this part of the country.

Food grains are stored for varying periods to ensure proper and balanced public
distribution throughout the year. Among the biotic and abiotic factors which affect grains / seeds
in storage, insect plays a major role in the deterioration of the grains / seeds causing both
qualitative and quantitative losses. Often the presence of insects in store houses are felt only
when they are hovering and flying around, by which time enormous loss and population built up
of insects might have occurred. Obviously, timely detection of the stored grain insects will help
to prevent heavy losses. TNAU is one of the pioneering Institutes in India in the development of
detection devices for stored grain insects. These devices exploit the wandering behaviour of the
insects and help in timely detection of insects in stored produce for effective pest management.
The Department of Agricultural Entomology, Centre for Plant Protection Studies, TNAU,
12
Coimbatore has developed a kit for stored grain pest management and it is named as
TNAU-Stored Grain Insect Management Kit. The kit containsa set of prototypes of all the
devices along with a CD-Rom that envisages the features and uses of the devices. The kit will be
an ideal handson training tool for Education, Extension centers (KVK, Plant clinic, Save
Grain Centers) and also for Private Ware Housing. This TNAU kit is the first of its kind in the
world. M/S Melwin Engineering has made MOU for the manufacturing of this kit.

advanced countries. Promoting healthy diet and lifestyle to reduce the global burden of non
communicable and chronic diseases requires the consumption of adequate quantities of fruits and
sk
vegetables.Consumer demands for high quality food with fresh like and natural
de
characteristics that require only minimum efforts and time for preparing healthy meals had led to
the evolution and increased production of fresh cut fruits and vegetables. As a result, the market
demand for minimally processed or lightly processed fruits and vegetables has rapidly increased.
Minimal or lightly processed operations like washing, sorting, trimming, peeling, slicing, etc.,
that do not affect the freshness of the raw material and retain fresh-like sensory qualities and
consumer convenience. Preparation of banana pseudostem for cooking involves more drudgery
for working women and it cannot be stored after preparation. The product has immense market
potential, if it could be preserved for a reasonable time. Keeping in view of the above facts, the
technology for Preservation of Banana Pseudostem by Minimal Processing has been developed
in the Department of Food and Agricultural Process Engineering, Tamil Nadu Agricultural
13
University, Coimbatore. The minimally processed banana pseudostem retains the freshness and
good condition for a period of 7 days without any brown coloration.M/S V.S.Natural Food has
made an MoU for this technology.

M/s Eco Green Unit is involved in the manufacture and sale of banana fibre based
products. The firm supplies machineries and inputs to Self Help Groups and purchases the
finished goods. Eco Green Unit was exploring the opportunity of designing and fabricating
banana fibre threading machine, as thread making demands most of the time and energy of the
craftsmen. BPD-TNAU has successfully facilitated the design and fabrication of banana fibre
threading machinethrough M/s Emral Tune Line Auto Tech Ind. who is yet another incubatee.
The machine designed was able to produce very fine threads of uniform quality. This simple
machine could also replace the workload of 7-10 persons at a time. Such a kind of interincubatee linkage has created business opportunities to both of them.

4.1. Incubator
At TNAU, a separate Directorate for Agri Business Development was started inthe
year2007 to initiate agribusinesspromotion, student entrepreneurship and consultancy services.
The formal concept of Business incubation was started in collaboration with ICRISAT,

4.2. Incubatees
An analytical study on the Farm business opportunities and challenges conducted by
the Directorate of Agribusiness Development, TNAU, Coimbatore during 2007 indicated that
majority of the farm business entrepreneurs or start ups had only limited scientific orientation,
achievement motivation, economic motivation, risk preference, self confidence, social
participation, information seeking and sharing behavior, mass media exposure, marketing ability
and managerial skills. In order to build up and create confidence among the entrepreneurs the
essentiality of agribusiness incubation was very much felt. As a blessing in disguise the Agri
Business Incubation (ABI) facility through NAIP-BPD unit was established in the year 2009.
Over three years (2009-2012) period of successful nurturing of agribusiness once again critical

The study listed out certain indicators on agri entrepreneurship such as communication
index, leadership index, behavior index, pro-activeness index, level of education, marketing
ud
behavior and the managerial ability were found to be on the positive side and found to make
St
significant contribution for the development of agri entrepreneurship by the Incubation support
provided by the TNAU-BPD Unit. The impact analysis further showed that 8.57 per cent of the
incubatees realized that their income level had increased more than 20 per cent. Around 22.85
PD
per cent of the incubatees were of the opinion that TNAU-BPU unit had supported for an
increase in their level of income to the tune of 15-20% by hand holding. The growth in terms of
business turnover of selected incubatees from baseline to till date is also given in graphical form.

Address the socio economic and human resource development approximately 1,66,495 man days
of direct and indirect employment has been created through the implementation of this sub
project under NAIP Component I. Direct employment for about 5 to 10 persons in startup
business units and more than 20 people in case of medium scale business units could be
observed.
Indirect employment has been generated both in supply chain and value chain of the
clientale.Inter incubatee supports, joint ventures and tie-ups both national and international have
also been achieved substantially, which has increased the confidence level of the BPD unit at
TNAU towards accelerated continued growth.

As more and more awareness onagribusiness incubation has been created through

needed .

In spite of the concept of working together on a win-win basis, royalty collection for
the technology transfer is always very tedious. Practical difficulties have been faced
sk
in tracking the sales of technology licensed companies. In most of the case, the
de
clients are not ready to spell out their exact business turn over every financial year.
No doubt, handholding and mentoring increase the level of confidence among the
agribusiness incubatees lack of proper financial support is always a problem. A kind
of venture capital support to be operated through the BPD units is needed
Although networking and sharing of technologies with other BPDs seem to be a
mandate, more openness and cooperation are solicited among the networking and
co-business partners respecting each other

11.1.Remedial Measures
Additional grant to create more infrastructural facilities to meet out the demands of
increasing number of entrepreneurs is requested.
The project should be extended to sustain, support and motivate the existing and new
entrepreneurs with an increased scientific and supporting manpower.Budget for the
purchase of separate vehicles for client servicing by the BPD Unit staff is also
requested during the extension of the project.
Angel investors / Venture Capitalists for Agribusiness sector should be identified,
