ELASTICITY (from Greek "ductible") is the ability of a body to resist a distorting

influence or stress and to return to its original size and shape when the stress is removed. Solid
objects will deform when forces are applied on them. If the material is elastic, the object will
return to its initial shape and size when these forces are removed.
REINFORCED CONCRETE (RC) is a composite material in which concrete's relatively
low tensile strength and ductility are counteracted by the inclusion of reinforcement having
higher tensile strength and/or ductility. The reinforcement is usually, though not necessarily, steel
reinforcing bars (rebar) and is usually embedded passively in the concrete before the concrete
sets.
A BENDING MOMENT is simply the bend that occurs in a beam due to a moment.
A bending moment is the reaction induced in a structural element when an
external force or moment is applied to the element causing the element to bend.
The SLUMP TEST is a means of assessing the consistency of fresh concrete. It is used,
indirectly, as a means of checking that the correct amount of water has been added to the mix.
it is that property of the concrete which determines the amount of useful internal work
necessary to produce full compaction.
A YIELD STRENGTH OR YIELD POINT is the material property defined as the stress at
which a material begins to deform plastically.
the stress beyond which a material becomes plastic.
COMPRESSIVE STRESS is the stress on materials that leads to a smaller volume.
By compressive stress the material is under compression.Compressive stress to bars, columns,
etc. leads to shortening. One can increase the compressive stress until compressive strength is
reached.
DEFINITION OF STIRRUP: A reinforcement used to resist shear and diagonal tension stresses
in a concrete structural member.
UNIT: NEWTON (N)
A stretching force (tension) pulling at both ends of a component or structure along its length.
