    HassespentherundergraduatecareeratAlmaCollegeandreceivedherbachelor'sdegreeinelementaryeducation
    beforegettingamastersdegreeatSaginawValleyStateUniversityineducationalleadership.ThisMay,Hasse
    graduatedwithaneducationalspecialistdegree,whichistwoyearspredoctorate,withadegreeincurriculuminstruction
    andcentralofficecertificationfromtheUniversityofMichigan.
    Asaprofessional,amomtoa3yearoldandawife,Hassesscheduleisfulltothebrim.Toaddtothelevelofintensity,
    herson,Grant,hascongenitalhighairwayobstructionsyndrome,alsoknownasCHAOSsyndrome.Grantwasbornwith
    alargecartilageobstructioninhisthroatthatlefthimwithoutvocalchordsandtherequirementofaventilatortosurvive.
    WearelearningtoseethingsdifferentlysinceGrant'sbirth,Hassesaid.Wevehadtheparadigmshiftforsure.Wedon't
    sweatthesmallstuffandwetakenothingforgranted.Everythingisimportanttousandwehavelearnedtomakethemost
    oflife.
    Grantspentmonthsundergoingsurgeries,breathingtreatmentsandheartsurgery,butkeptdefyingtheodds.Most
    childrenwhoarebornwithCHAOSsyndromehaveaportionofvocalchordstouse,butGrantwasbornwithoutanyand
    istheonlyknownsurvivorthathadcompleteblockageandnovocalchords.
    GrantsdoctorscreatedvocalchordsfromtheoriginalcartilageblockagetheyremovedandsincethentheHassefamily
    receivednotethatthecreatedchordshaveapotentialtofunctionasGrantsmusclesstrengthen.Inthemeantime,Hasse
    andherhusband,Tadd,havebeenteachinghimbabysignlanguage.
    DuetotherarityofGrantsmedicalcondition,ithasdrawnalotofmediaattention.TheHassefamilyparticipatedina
    commercialwiththeUniversityofMichiganHealthSystemtofurtherexplaintheconditiontothepublicandmedical
    community,whichwillsoonbereleasedtothepublicforviewing,andtheyalsohaveaninterviewscheduledwithThe
    AssociatedPressinthenearfuture.
    Grantattendsamedicallyfragilepreschoolclassroomformedicallyimpairedchildrenandreceivesnursingsupportsoa
    healthprofessionalisalwaystrainedinhiscare.

    Hassescommitmenttohelpingyouthstartedmuchbeforeshebecameadedicatedmother.Shefoundherself
    encouragingneighborhoodchildren,hersisterandcousinstobeherstudentsinherearlychildhood.
    Teachingformewasanobrainer,shesaid.Itwasn'tuntilIbeganteachingthatotherssawmedifferently.Ididn'tthinkI
    wasanymorespecialthanthenext,butwhenotherssawmyactionstheywereinclinedtofollow.
    Hassehasspentthepast11yearsofherprofessionallifeasaliteracycoachandbehavioralspecialistinFitzgerald
    PublicSchools.Sheisalwaysopentobeingcoachedandconstructivelycriticized,asshesaidshebelievesitmakesher
    abettereducatorandastrongerperson.
    Thereisalwayssomethingtolearn,shesaid.
    ItwasthroughanintermediateschooldistrictcontactthatHasseheardabouttheopeninginRomeoCommunitySchools.
    I'vehadexperiencepresentingattheISD,andknewoftheincrediblethingsthatRomeowasdoing,Hassesaid.Iwas
    readytobeapartofit.
    Themultipleroundinterviewprocessstartedwithaninterviewpanel,followedbyawritingsampleandteaminterviews,
    andthenfinallyadirectschoolinterviewwiththeHamiltonParsonsstaff,superintendentandinterestedparents.
    Whatmadeheragreatcandidateinmymindwasherverystronginstructionalbackgroundandhowthatwouldhelpour
    teacherscontinuetogrowintheareasourdistricthasbeenworkingon,saidEricWhitney,superintendentofRomeo
    CommunitySchools.Hersparkandenergyhavebeenappreciatedbythefamiliesandstaff,andinjustafewshortweeks
    onthejobsheisalreadydoinggreatthingstobringpeopletogether.
    HerinterviewwasonaFridayandshefoundoutthenextTuesdaythatshehadbeenofferedtheposition.
    Iwasoverjoyedtohearthenews,shesaid.IknewthiswasgoingtobelifechangingformyselfandfortheHamilton
    Parsonsstaff.
    Theinterviewprocessshedlightontheneedsattheschool,andthebiggestwastheneedforincreasedbehavioral
    supportwhileovercomingthehurdleofdoingsowithoutadditionalfunding.
    Idecidedrightawaytocreateateacherledcommitteethatweworkedcollaboratively,Hassesaid.
    SheworkedwithninestaffmemberstheentiresummerandintroducedStephenCoveysTheLeaderinMe,awhole
    schoolphilosophythatvaluesstudentleadershipandengagement,whichresearchshowsresultsinbehavioral
    improvement.Thepricetagfortheinitiativeis$22,000,andlocalbusinessendorsementsandparentsupportthrough
    Romeosannualfunruncouldlightentheload.
    Leadingisdoing,Hassesaid.Ibelievewholeheartedlyinthisprocessforkids.Itwillshapeourstudentsandthe
    communityatlargeformanyyearstocome.
    WhenHassefindsfreetime,shesaidsheenjoystryingnewrestaurantsandtakingdaytripswithherfamily.
