SAILING

By Dimitris Sifnaios C 4

Sailing comprises wind propulsion of a craft by means of sails and steering it

over water, ice or land, depending on the type of craft. A sailor manages
the force of the wind on the sails by adjusting their angle with respect to the
moving sailing craft and sometimes by adjusting the sail area. The force
transmitted from the sails is resisted by forces from the hull, keel, and rudder of a
sailing craft, by forces from skate runners for an iceboat, and by forces from
wheels for a land sailing craft to allow steering a course on a point of sail with
respect to the true wind.
There are boats called LASER. They are 4.2 m. in length and 1.4 m. in width.
The mainsail has an area of 7.1 m. It is for one person.
In 1991, the title of Panellionikis (Panhellenic winner) was given to Dimitris
Theodorakis of NAOV( Nautical athletic Club of Voula) and in 1992 to Nikos
Nikoltsoudis of ANOG (Athletic Nautical Club of Glyfada).
First Place for best performance was given to Anthony Bougiouris in the 2009
World Championship.
With this boat we had great distinctions for Emilios Papathanasiou of
Olympiakos, and his greater distinction: the gold medal in Cesme, Turkey.
Best performance was achieved by Antonis Bougiouris in the Sydney Olympic
Games.
Paul Kontidis was the first Cypriot athlete who brought a silver medal to his
country in the 2012 Olympics in London. Tom Slinsby from Australia conquered
first place.
It is a very beautiful activity and I recommend it to all who love the sea.
