KINETICS OF CURVILINEAR MOTION

When a particle moves along a curved path which is known, the equation of
motion for the particle may be written in the tangential, normal, and
binormal directions.

CENTRIFUGAL FORCE (Reversed Normal Effective Force)

Whenever a body rotates about an axis at a speed of , there exists a force
called centrifugal inertia force directed away from the axis of rotation.

Where:
V
r
W
an
m

= normal velocity
= radius of curvature
= weight
= normal acceleration
= mass

CENTRIPETAL FORCE (Reversed Tangential Effective Force)

The tangential inertia force (centripetal force) also known as reversed
tangential effective force is given by the formula:

Where:
= angular acceleration
r = radius of curvature
W = weight
at = tangential acceleration
m = mass

BANKING OF CURVES
The maximum speed v that a car can round a highway curve without
skidding is given by the relationship:

Where:
= angle of banking
= angle of friction between the tires and the road surface ( =
arctan)
R = radius of the curve, m
V = velocity in m/s

PRACTICE PROBLEMS:
1. A 6 kg ball attached to a weightless cord around a horizontal circle with
radius of 1.5 m. The cord generated a cone. If the strength of the cord is 120
N, at what speed will it break?

2. The ball is fastened to the end of a 1 meter long string. Then as the ball
moves with a constant speed, it describes a horizontal path in which a string
generates a locus of points defining the surface of a cone. Determine the
speed of the ball along the circular path if = 45.

3. The 2-kg block B and 15-kg cylinder A are connected to a light cord that
passes through a hole in the center of the smooth table. If the block is given
a speed of v = 10 m/s, determine the radius r of the circular path along
which it travels.

4. The 2-kg block B and 15-kg cylinder A are connected to a light cord that
passes through a hole in the center of the smooth table. If the block travels
along a circular path of radius r = 1.5 m, determine the speed of the block.

5. The 3-kg disk D is attached to the end of a cord as shown in the figure.
The other end of the cord is attached to a ball-and-socket joint located at the
center of a platform. If the platform rotates rapidly, and the disk is placed on
it and released from rest as shown, determine the time it takes for the disk to
reach a speed great enough to break the cord. The maximum tension the
cord can sustain is 100 N and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the
disk and the platform is K = 0.1.

6. At the instant shown, the 50-kg projectile travels in the vertical plane with
a speed of v = 40 m/s. Determine the tangential component of its
acceleration and the radius of curvature p of its trajectory at this instant.

7. The sports car is traveling along a 30 banked road having a radius of

curvature of = 500 ft. If the coefficient of static friction between the tires
and the road is s= 0.2, determine the maximum safe speed so no slipping
occurs. Neglect the size of the car.
