Meet Our Head Students

Head Boy Ben OFarrell
Hello my name is Ben OFarrell.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS
Parent Interviews will be held on the afternoons of
Tuesday 22nd March and Wednesday 23rd March in
the school Gymnasium. We would strongly

I joined

Kavanagh in Year 7 from St Bernadettes,

which is also my local Parish over in South
Dunedin.
I have always loved sports and my main passion is the
beautiful

gamefootball,

which

dream

to

play

professionally when I leave school. I also play futsal for

the mighty Kavanagh College 1st V and run occasionally.
Some of my hobbies are fishing, Edmund Rice Camps and
watching Les Miserables (wow).
What I love about Kavanagh is the sense of community
here, so many amazing people looking out for each other
and, of course, Kavanagh Day where the passion and House
spirit on display is mesmerising.
My goals as Head Boy are:

To encourage students to give things a golike

Caritas Challenge or the musical

To promote Social Justice projects in the school,

making sure we are helping those who have so much

Rakiura 2016: Wnanga and Leadership Camp

On Tuesday morning, students from Year 10 Mori Studies
and Year 13 students Shania Fox, Moewai Marsh and Eleanor
Biss left for camp. The destination this year is Rakiura/Stewart
Island. The learning focus for this wnanga is ng manu (birds)
and rongo (bush medicine).
According to Mori legend, Rakiura is te puka (the anchor) of
the South Island/Te waka-a-Mui. On the island we will be
walking the three day Rakiura Great Walk which begins by
walking through a chain link at Lee Bay that signifies the
anchor. The other part of the chain sculpture emerges from
Foveaux Straight/Te ara-a-Kiwa near Bluff Hill/Motu-puhoe.
After the walk, we will be visiting historic bird sanctuary Ulva
Island/Te Wharawhara.
Our last night of the wnanga will be in New Zealand's second
oldest town - Bluff. Here we will be staying at the southernmost
marae in the world - Te Rau Aroha marae. We will return home
via The Catlins.
A huge thank you to everyone who
made this camp possible. Mauri ora.
