A Message from Te Tumuaki

Kia ora tatou, greetings everyone. What a fabulous start we have had to Term 2. The good weather over the holidays made a significant difference to the wellbeing of staff and students which was welcome. Some of you may have seen the article in last Tuesdays Press about the worrying state of staff and students in schools across Christchurch. It was grim reading and while we feel for our colleagues and children across the city we can be very grateful that this situation is not reflected at Russley. I put that down partly to the fabulous partnership we have with parents and the way we are supporting each other. A big thank you to parents and staff for that ongoing effort. Staffing We have appointed a very experienced Year 7/8 teacher, Mrs Kari Visser, to Room 1. She taught in international schools before coming to Christchurch, has an excellent background in literacy and numeracy teaching and she also has experience working in the International Baccalaureate system. We are really pleased to have appointed someone of her calibre. Cross Country I hope our students have dusted off their running shoes for next Wednesdays cross country and we hope to see lots of parents watching the event. It is difficult to give exact times for each race as it depends entirely on the speed of the previous groups run so to avoid disappoint, we suggest parents arrive well before the scheduled race time if you want to be sure you see your child run. Open Day and Meeting for Parents of Year 6 and 7 Students On Tuesday 22nd May between 9.00am and 12.30pm parents are invited to visit the Year 7/8 classes to see what students are learning. In the evening from 7.00-9.00pm there will be a meeting for parents where staff will outline programmes, our senior students will share some reflections and parents can ask questions about the programmes in preparation for 2013. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Acceleration Literacy and Mathematics Programmes We have been selected to trial some programmes aimed at accelerating learning in reading, writing or mathematics for students who may benefit. Students have been selected to work in small groups with the lead teachers this term. If the pilot is successful it may mean more students are able to receive this sort of support in the future. Mufti Day Next Friday 11th May the Student Council is holding a red-and-yellow theme mufti day to raise funds for Ronald McDonald house. A gold coin donation please from anyone wearing mufti. Winter Sports Our sports programme starts on Friday 18th May, weather permitting. Students look forward to this inter school event. We are struggling to get enough coaches and managers for teams so if you can help out at all please let us know. Traffic Disruption Just a warning that there will be some disruption to Cutts Rd traffic between Yaldhurst Rd and Woodbury St in May as the council replaces the existing streetlight poles. Dare I say- even more reason for us to be careful and considerate when parking and driving outside the school gates. It would be fantastic if we got through this term without having to report any cars to the Police. ERO Report I have saved the best for last - our confirmed ERO is available to view at http://www.ero.govt.nz and on the school website. The quality of the governance, management and programmes at Russley meant that ERO was impressed and confident enough to put us on a 4-5 year as opposed to the usual 3 year review cycle. This was a team effort congratulations are due to the whole Russley family. Our students are receiving a great education in spite of what Mother Nature has thrown at us. Students Achieving at their Personal Best Talking About Lighthouses

Mrs Lindsay (Spencers nana) came into the class to talk about the two lighthouses shed lived in. The first lighthouse was at Farewell Spit, the very top of the South Island. Her family stayed there for two years. During that time the children liked to bunny hop down the enormous sand dunes, falling over at the bottom. Also there were lots of sandstorms; the children werent allowed outside or they might have got lost. Mrs Lindsay also lived in the Stephens Island lighthouse. There were 30,000 tuatara there. To get onto the island you needed to get put on by a crane. So you climbed into a wooden box hooked onto the crane and it swung you onto the island. Also they owned animalsa cow, a bull, some sheep and a dog. The dogs name was Sally. Everyday they would take her to the beach. The cow was for milking so they werent going to kill it for beef. The first time they milked the cow the children said, Were not drinking milk from a dirty old cow. So their mother, Mrs Lindsay, tricked them by putting the milk into a milk bottle and pouring it into their cups so they thought it was from the bottle, not the cow. The bulls name was HuffnPuff. The children liked him because he was very friendly, never charged them and never hurt the sheep. But one day he accidentally fell off a cliff and they changed his name to HuffnPuffnStuff! The type of bulb the lighthouse had was a 1000 watt. The size of the bulb was bigger than my hand. It was the only lighthouse with a red light. Each lighthouse had a different signal. Also, the children did home schooling. Their teacher was their mum. They enjoyed home school and they got to have three days off a week. Lucky! By Isaac Paul, Year 4.

The Holocaust
Ninety men, Two to a bed. Not enough blankets, So many unfed. Grown men, Hollow eyes. Shows the pain, They hold inside. They were prisoners, Whod committed no crime. They were the victims, Of demonic minds. Tortured, humiliated, Stripped of their pride. Subjects to experiment, Waste of innocent lives. Barb wire fences, As far as you could see. Trapped in this cage, Never to leave. Nazis and Jews, Both human arent they? So how could Hitler, Treat them that way?
