Q1:
2 =0.85 and =0.77 for Grade 40 concrete
Limiting depth is 0.36d as AS3600
If x=0.36d
Fst=fsy Ast (Tensile steel yielding)
For force equilibrium, Fc=Fst
Ast = 3562.6 mm2
Mu = 828.67 kNm
= 0.8
M* = 662.85 kNm
Q2:
=0.826 for Grade 32 concrete
Ast = 0.01*bd
Design load, w = 1.2g+1.5q = 51 kN/m
M* = wl2/8 = 330.5 kNm
Therefore, the section need to design for Muo=M*/0.8 = 413.1 kNm
(Assume that the section is ductile, ku< 0.36)
Fc = Fst gives x = 0.2225d (< 0.36d; assumption is correct)
Muo = Fc*z gives d = 550.7 mm

Q3:
=0.826 for Grade 32 concrete
i.
Assume steel is yielded
Then Fc = Fst gives x = 100.6 mm
Then ku = x/d = 0.22 < 0.36. So steel is yielded (our assumption is correct)
and section is ductile.
x = 100.6 mm
Muo = Fc*z = 275.8 kNm
= 0.8
M* = Muo = 220 kNm
It is under reinforced and ductile section
ii.
Assume steel is yielded
Then Fc = Fst gives x = 222.5 mm
Then ku = x/d = 0.49 < 0.545. So steel is yielded (our assumption is correct)
but section is non-ductile (ku = x/d > 0.36)
x = 222.5 mm
Muo = Fc*z = 537.1 kNm
= 0.654
M* = Muo = 351 kNm
It is under reinforced and non-ductile section
iii.
Assume steel is yielded
Then Fc = Fst gives x = 324.17 mm
Then ku = x/d = 0.72 > 0.545. So steel is not yielded (our assumption is
incorrect)
Now assume steel is NOT yielded
Need to use fs = stE,
Fc = Fst gives x = 266.9 mm
Then ku = x/d = 0.59 > 0.545. So steel is not yielded (now our assumption is
correct)
x = 266.9 mm
Muo = Fc*z = 611.2 kNm
= 0.547 but >0.6. Therefore = 0.6
M* = Muo = 366.7 kNm
It is over reinforced and non-ductile section
