The history and development of

democratization in Indonesia and its


impact on the Indonesian Society

Background
The development of democracy in Indonesia
has been up and down
There is still a main problem that we faced is
to how with many ethnics and cultures in
Indonesia how to increase their level of
economical life with teaching them a
democratic social and political life.
This problem appear when forming a political
system where leadership is strong enough to
carry out an economic development and
nation building, with the participation of the
people to avoid dictatorship

From the development of democracy in Indonesia,


Indonesias history can be divided into four eras:
First era of the Republic of Indonesia (1945 1959) is a
Liberal democracy (democracy parliamentary, is where the
parliaments and political parties emphasize their role
Second era of the Republic Indonesia (1959 1965) is a
Guided Democracy (demokrasi terpimpin) in many aspects
has been leave from the liberal democracy but formally still
as its base, and showing a few aspects of people democracy
Third era of the Republic Indonesia (1965-1998) is a
Pancasila Democracy which is a constitutional democracy
that emphasize a presidential system
Fourth era of the Republic Indonesia (1998 now) is a
Reform democracy where is the wanting to enforce
democracy in Indonesia as a correction from the previous
political practices that happens before in the New Order
democracy.
