Tutorial (Chapter 1.1)

1. Determine the mass and the weight of the air contained in a room whose dimensions are
6 m 6m 8 m. Assume the density of the air is 1.16 kg/m .
3

2. Consider a system whose temperature is 18 C. Express this temperature in R, K and F.

3. The gauge pressure in a liquid at a depth of 3 m is read to be 28 kPa. Determine the gauge
pressure in the same liquid at a depth of 9 m.
4. The absolute pressure in water at a depth of 5 m is read to be 145 kPa. Determine:
a)
b)

the local atmospheric pressure,

the absolute pressure at a depth of 5 m in a liquid whose specific gravity is
0.85 at the same location.

5. An airplane whose mass is 5000 flying with a velocity of 150 m/s at an altitude of 10,000
m, both measured relative to the surface of the earth. The acceleration of gravity can be
taken as constant at g=9.81 m/s2.
a)
b)

Calculate the kinetic and potential energies of the plane, both in unit KJ
If the kinetic energy increased by 10,000 kJ, with no change in elevation, what
would be the final velocity, in m/s.

6. A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston-cylinder device. The piston has a mass
of 4 kg and a cross-sectional area of 35 cm . A compressed spring above the piston
exerts a force of 60 N on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the
pressure inside the cylinder.

7. A manometer containing oil ( = 850 kg/m ) is attached to a tank filled with air. If the oil
level difference between the two columns is 60 cm and the atmospheric pressure is 98
kPa, determine the absolute pressure of the air in the tank.

8. A person gets into an elevator at the lobby level of a hotel together with his 30-kg suitcase,
and gets out at the 10th floor 35 m above. Determine the amount of energy consumed by
the motor of the elevator that is now stored in the suitcase.
