Set Induction:
Lately weve been working on our skip counting
and youre all getting really great.
What are some of the numbers weve been skip
counting by? (2s, 3s, 5s, 10s)
Was this hard at first? Is it getting easier? Why
do you think that is? (practice)
Learnable Piece:
The focus of this short activity is to practice our
skip counting, but this time were going to make it
fun and a little bit challenging.
Were going to count by 2s, 5s, and 10s like
weve been working on, but Im going to throw in
some harder things too, so be ready!
By the end, I think you will all be more fluent at
skip counting. Plus, its a nice little break to get
out of our seats and get moving for a bit.
Presentation of New Material/Directions:
In a minute, were all going to stand up and get
in a circle around these desks. Make sure we are
close enough so that we can lean over or take a
step over and touch our neighbors hands.
We will start with me and count by ones. I will say
1. The person to my left will say 2, the person to
their left will say?

But, at the same time, you will also copy my

movement when you say your number. If I squat
and say 1, you have to squat and say 2, and so
on.
Any questions before we get into our circle?

Notes:

Activity:
Students stand in a circle around the desks and
try to count off as quickly as possible all the way
around the circle. Start with 1, then the student to
left says 2, and the student on their left says 3,
and so on until the count comes back to the
beginning. When they say their number, they will
also copy the movement of the first person.
Challenge the kids to go as quickly and
seamlessly as possible. When everyone can do
this proficiently, count by twos, fives, tens, or
threes and try counting backward.
Possible Modifications:
Start at a number larger than 1
Lesson Review:
Once everyone is back in their seats ask, What
was the hardest number to skip count to? Why
do you say that? Was it hard to also do the
movement too? How did you feel about going
backward? Do you think youre better at skip
counting now? What might be a really hard
number to skip count to?

Possible
movements:
-squats
-slap
neighbors
hand
-the wave
-jumping jack
-sky jump
-alligator clap
