1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
Fantasy- you have a gym where everyone comes in works out and they all have goals and are working
towards their goals so they have a mutual bond to help eachother accomplish their goals ie spotters
Reality- its a grownup daycare, nobody takes care of their stuff, everyone leaves weights out, you have to
be plumber, electrician, first aid guy
2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?
(educational level and requirements)
Current level is doctorate chiropracting and is constantly reading different training and nutrition things to
help himself and his clients

3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
Come in open the gym, typically he has a class to teach at opening until around 10 AM then he does
chiropractic stuff. Through out the day he comes out and checks on everything and chats with people. At 5PM he
comes out and works out or trains somebody else. Has to collect money and do book keeping stuff because he
doesnt have an automated checking system so he has to make sure everyone pays

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?
(job security)

Revised Fall 2013

Security is dictated by how hard he wants to work and how much effort he puts into it. The level of
competency of people who are trainers or gym owners is going to be raised because of liability rules. The standard
of trainers is going to increase

5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
Lowest $0 because sometimes people dont want your product. But reasonably a trainer as a side job can
get $15-$20 thousand a year but if youre very popular or have a very successful gym, then you can break 6
figures

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

(growth potential)
People will become more knowledgeable with things like training seminars so the information is passed around
and people will start to expect a higher standard from their trainers aswell.
***Questions 7-10 will be created by the ISM student.
7. Do you have any history with martial arts? If so what kind and what was your training like?
His dad has done martial arts for a very long time, so just being around that was his training, but he didnt have a
very formal training. His dad would just show him things and basic skills. Once he got to college he started to
train on his own in a combination of the Japanese martial arts so he had more of a formal teaching then. He would
go to the classes twice a week with pretty much beginner stuff getting to a yellow belt.
8. Do you believe weightlifting is beneficial in Martial. Why or Why not? If yes, then what kind of regime
would you recommend
Yes it is beneficial. A stronger athlete is always better as far as performance and also injury prevention,
you can use weight training as a cardio exercise with things like interval training. Your training can be anything
like single joint rehabilitation movements all the way to full body strengthening exercises

9. Do you think its more beneficials to gain muscle and go up in weightclass, lose weight and go down in
weightclasses, or try to stay in the same weight class (What are the pros/cons of losing weight to cut and gaining a
lot of muscle to go up in weightclass)
cutting- You can move your own body a little better, but you get weaker when losing muscle mass. If you
do a legitimate cut where you lose weight slowly its find, but when you try to do a quick cut over like 48 hours, it
dehydrates you and is dangerous for you health
Bulking- you have to now hall all this muscle around and all the muscle needs O2, so your cardio work
needs to increase to be able to fuel all this new muscle

10. Do you recommend any sort of supplements for fighters

Revised Fall 2013

Wouldnt recommend creatine because its not good for that sort of athete. Protein supplements is good
because it is good for the anabolic parts of it. Fish oil, multi vitamins and other essenntial fatty acids.
Carbohydrate drinks are good like Gatorade, pediosure and other things to raise blood sugar up after
training sessions, but he wouldnt recommend that for each person because it depends on how much the
person is sweating and working and losing energy each workout.
