Abstract

The Origin of Sen Prathan Sib

Prapoj Patrakard*

*Federation of Thai Traditional Medicine, Sport Garden Building, 2nd Floor, Tiwanon Rd., Ministry of Public

Health, Nonthaburi 11000

Sen Prathan Sib or ten primary energy lines (paths) in traditional Thai massage are Ida, Pingala, Sushumna,
Kalathari, Sahasrangsi, Dwari, Chandabhusang, Rujam, Sukumang, and Sikhini. Knowing about the origin of Sen
Prathan Sib or how the knowledge about the ten energy lines was derived is very important because it will connect
us to the root of knowledge and the theory of the Sen (energy lines).
The traditional standard textbooks of traditional Thai massage which were systematically recorded are
Massage Illustrations (Pharb Phaen Nuad) of Wat Phra Chetuphon (a Buddhist temple), the Textbook of Etiology
(Rok Nithan Khamchan 11) with a section on Sen Sib (ten energy lines), and Massage Scripture Volumes 1 and 2 in
the Royal Medical Textbook (Tamra Vechasart Chabab Luang) of King Rama V, but no mention was made of the
energy lines origin.
A comparison Sen Prathan Sib theory with Nadis (energy lines or paths) of yoga shows that both of them have
some similarities such as the belief in the routes of wind element, the number of routes or lines (totaling 72,000),
and three lines of Sen Prathan Sib and three lines of Nadis having the same names (i.e. Ida, Pingala, Sushumna).
The main path of Ida in Thai massage is on the left side of the body and Pingala is on the right side, while the Nadi
Ida and Nadi Pingala cross each other on the left and right sides of the body. Moreover, the wind line of Ida in Thai
massage and Nadi Ida are the same (wind of the moon); and the wind of Pingala in Thai massage and Nadi Pingala
are the same (wind of the sun). The main paths of Sushumna in Thai massage and Nadi Sushumna are in the
midline of the body.
However, there is no evidence of the other lines of Sen Prathan Sib, except that in the Thai Massage Textbooks
there are records of the pressure points in healing symptoms and the relationship between Sen Prathan Sib and the
elements including the etiology of their deterioration and malfunctioning as well as the effect of seasonal changes.
Such matters are not mentioned in any yoga textbooks, which however contain some information about illness
etiology and diagnosis. It is believed that Thai massage therapists have adopted such principles of etiology and
diagnosis and got them modified for application; later on they became the Thai massage wisdom. That was
because, in Ayurvedic massage, oil is used and it is a part of the Panja Karma (five actions) which do not mention
about Sen Prathan Sib or the 14 Nadis in the yoga principle.

Key words: Sen Prathan Sib, Thai massage, Ten primary energy lines

Abstract

Antibacterial Activities of Seven Indigenous Vegetables

Jiraporn burakorn*, Rueankeaw Praphruet**

*Department of Science Service, Bureau of Community Technology, Bangkok
**Institute of Product Quality and Standardization, Maejo University, Chiang Mai

Aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic extracts of seven medicinal plant species commonly consumed in Thailand were
evaluated for antimicrobial activity against four pathogenic bacteria, i.e. Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Klebsiella
pneumoniae ATCC27736, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538 and Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC12228, using
the agar well diffusion method with 21 medicinal plant extract samples (30 g/plate) for each bacterial strain. The
results showed that the methanolic extract of Sechium edule caused the largest inhibition zones with E. coli and S.
epidermidis of 20.46 mm and 35.23 mm in diameter, respectively; while the aqueous extract of Mentha cordifolia
and the methanolic extract of Piper sarmentosum caused the largest inhibition zones with K. pneumoniae and S.
aureus at 19.15 mm and 24.77 mm in diameter, respectively. The analysis of the minimum inhibitory concentration
(MIC) which inhibited the four pathogenic bacteria using the microdilution assay showed that MICs of the
methanolic extract of Sechium edule for E. coli and S. epidermidis were 7.81 mg/ml and 62.50 mg/ml, respectively,
while the MIC of the aqueous extract of Mentha cordifolia and the methanolic extract of Piper sarmentosum for

K. pneumoniae and S. aureus was 15.62 mg/ml. In addition, the MICs of chloramphenicol for E. coli, K.
pneumoniae, S. epidermidis and S. aureus were 15, 7, 31 and 7 g/ml, respectively.

The objectives of this study were to observe the procedures of examination, diagnosis and treatment based on
the 10 main energy lines (sen prathan sib) theory and the element (tard) theory of Thai traditional massage
pratised by Thai massage therapists and to compare the diagnosis performed by Thai massage therapists with that
performed by modern medical doctors. The study was carried out on 200 volunteers selected according to 12
groups of symptoms from outpatients at Abhaibhubejhr Hospital with the help of the assistants of Thai massage
therapists in screening and documenting the initial case history before referring to the modern doctor for the
examination and diagnosis; after that the volunteers were sent to six Thai massage therapists for examination,
diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of the treatment.
The study showed that Thai massage therapists had two different techniques of examination related to the 10
main energy lines: one was pressing on the origin of the 10 main energy lines and the other was pressing on the
affected area to determine whether the affected area was related to which main energy line. Whereas the diagnosis
based on the theory of elements showed that most of the volunteers (49.5%) were diagnosed with the vitiation of
earth element (tard din pikarn) and 29.5% with the vitiation of wind element (tard lom pikarn). By comparison,
Thai massage therapists diagnosed the volunteers according to the symptoms and the areas with the presenting
symptoms whereas modern medical doctors diagnosed according to the cause of illness or sometime according to
the symptoms.
Regarding the treatment, Thai massage therapists treated the volunteers by pressing on the points on the
affected main energy lines, but each therapist had a different technique for the massage. Apart from Thai massage,
other supplementary techniques were also used such as fomentation with herbal poultice (14.5%). Some doctors
also advised the volunteers about the regimen to be followed.

Abstract

The association between Thai Traditional Medicine Dhammanamai Health Promotion

Program and quality of life in diabetes patients in Kantharalak district, Si Sa Ket
province

Prapa Pithaksa and Pannasuk Salitool

Kantharalak Hospital, Kantharalak District, Si Sa Ket Province

This is a quasi-experimental study designed to assess the quality of life (QOL) of 676 of diabetes patients
receiving the dhammanamai health promotion program. Of all the patients, 385 were in the intervention group
receiving the health promotion program twice, 2 months apart. The control group was comprised of 291 patients
receiving the usual care. The quality of life of the subjects was assessed using the WHO Quality of Life-BREF. The
percentage, paired samples t-test, and independent t-test were used for data analysis.
The paired t-test showed moderate quality of life in both groups. The intervention group had significantly
greater quality of life than the control group in terms of emotional, social, and environmental well-being (p<0.05).
The effect of dhammanamai health promotion program on the increase in the QOL of diabetes patients was not
clearly observed as the QOL scores of both pre- and post-study observations were also moderate.
In conclusion, the dhammanamai health promotion program can be an alternative for improving the QOL in
terms of emotional, social, and environmental well-being of diabetes patients.
