ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR UNIT 5 TEACHERS NOTES

Procedure

Write the term pen friend on the board. Ask your students if they know what it means, and whether anyone already
has a pen friend.
Ask your students to get into pairs to tackle the activity. Give each student a copy of Worksheet 5.
Now tell your students to read the four short letters on the worksheet, and work together in their pairs to complete
the seven sentences that follow.
Finally, ask your students to decide which of the four correspondents (Junko, Steve, Helmut or Maria) they would best
like as a pen friend. Discuss as a class.

This activity is an extension of the previous one.

Procedure

Tell each student to reread the letter (on Worksheet 5) from the person they would like as a pen friend and to think
about the different pieces of information it contains (i.e. name, age, where they live, likes and dislikes).
Ask each student to write a suitable reply to the pen friend they have chosen.
If you wish, display the finished letters around the classroom for other students to read.
