Barangay Sta. Rosa, Bayombong Nueva Vizcaya

(Residence who are near the river)

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT

The place is situated 5 kilometers from our school (SMU); there are some barangays there which
are situated near the river which we concentrated to assess last Friday. Their house is made up of mostly
wooden materials and scrap. They are also near to farm which serves as their source of income.

There method of disposal usually is they mixed it then burn. Most of their CR is water sealed and
they share it to other families in the area. Mostly they don’t have any drainage system.

EDUCATION

As we interview the residence there, most of them are high school graduates and the children are
on their elementary level. Many didn’t continue to pursue college because of financial problems and
early marriage.

TRANSPORTATION

They use tricycle as means of transportation, some use single motor but the main means of
transportation is the tricycle. It is seldom visited by a 4 wheeled vehicles because of not cemented roads,
only those big trucks which loads gravel and sand are passing.

SAFETY

The only problem with their safety is when typhoon occurs and the river over flows causing
floods to the area so they are evacuated to the barangay center. Also their farms are being flooded
causing destruction to their craps which is a major problem to them because this is the main source of
their income.

POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT

The Barangay Captain serves as the head of the barangay, and assisted by his “kagawads”. Every
kagawad has their own duties and responsibilities. As we in interview the residence, they told us that they
are not that much contented or satisfied with the services and projects which the barangay offers. They
are still looking for better and more concrete projects to be implemented such as philhealth services,
prioritization of indigent people and livelihood projects to serve as additional income to the family.

Aside from those comments from the residence, we also ask the Barangay Captain if they are
communicating and cooperating with the external and outside programs and endeavors of government and
non-government institutions, and he said yes they are accepting it such as the outreach programs of other
organizations from our school.

*Sta. Rosa is one of the adopted barangay of SMU and recipient of community extension
programs.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES

The residents of barangay Sta. Ana avails most of their health and social services from their
barangay health center and from VRH, the tertiary hospital of Bayombong, their municipality. That
includes immunization of newborns, prenatal and reproductive health services/ checkups. Furthermore,
they also have services of phil health, health care for the indigenous people and medical missions from
non government institutions and organizations once a year or every other year. Some residents are able to
open up to us about their concerns regarding the health care system of the barangay which for them is
slow as they still have to be referred to the municipal health office for usual sickness such as fever, flu
and others due to lack of medicines and assistive devices. Others also complained that at times, they are
not able to receive the services because people near the barangay are the ones prioritized.

COMMUNICATION

Most of the residents use cell phones as mean for communication. They use this in sending
messages in and out of the place. During the interview, the people said that they seldom meet problems
on communication and that they are thankful that cell phones are now readily available for purposes of
emergency situation and crisis. However, their telephone line is not working that is why most of the
information passed on from other offices and barangays is sent through telegrams and mails.

Majority of the people use Ilocano, a native dialect as their avenue for communication. This
facilitates the understanding of the people. Although some are fluent in Tagalog, this is not the dominant
dialect being used.

ECONOMICS

Out of the 15 families interviewed, 13 are known to have low income, where in their weekly
salary ranges from 1000-2000 pesos which is of course not enough to meet the daily demands and
necessities of the family members. Moreover, their expenses exceed their weekly wages as it is used for
their food requirements, transportation needs, medicines of sick members and other miscellaneous ones.
The usual work or jobs of the residents are jeep and tricycle drivers, construction workers,
farmers. However, some are well off in the barangay when it comes to their economic status but they are
located at the barangay proper.

-
RECREATION

Because of the difficulty of their economic situation and the lack of recreational centers of the
place, most of the people do not have recreational activities aside from playing cards, gambling, farming,
and taking care of animals. This is also their way of relieving the day’s stress and socialization to other
residents.
