Naandi – Working in 9 States with a Mission

Naandi is a professional, autonomous, venture dedicated to changing lives of the under-served

populations in India through public-private partnerships. Set up in 1998, Naandi’s mission is
to demonstrate the strengths of convergence of state and civil society in working in the areas of
safe water, health, education and livelihoods. Since its inception in 1998, Naandi’s initiatives
have touched the lives of almost a million people in some of the most backward regions of
Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka,
and the Andaman Islands.

Naandi’s vision is to eradicate poverty across India under which drinking water access security
is a vital issue for the majority of India’s rural poor. Naandi is already engaged in piloting
various projects to promote safe water facilities in rural India through a membership fee-linked
sustainable community-based safe drinking water model. Naandi’s strengths are supporting
participatory community involvement through Village Panchayats, and building the village’s
capacity in managing and delivering self-sustainable services. Naandi’s tripartite model in the
drinking water domain involves the community in the process from the start resulting in
community ownership and ensuring long-term sustainability. Naandi’s experience in the water
sector comes from a series of community-based water, sanitation and hygiene projects and safe
drinking water education campaigns in its programme areas. This experience has encouraged
Naandi to propose the current community-based safe drinking water model of partnership with
our technical partners for reaching the benefits of safe drinking water to the identified villages
target population.

Background / Overview of problem

India’s growing population is putting a severe strain on the country’s natural resources. India
has made progress in the supply of safe water to urban centers, but gross disparity in coverage
exists across the country, especially in rural India. Although access to drinking water has
improved, the World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to
unsafe water. In India, diarrhea alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily. India is among the
23 nations around the globe, where health problems occur due to the consumption of fluoride
contaminated water. An estimated 62 million people in India are seriously affected by fluoride
contamination. The extent of fluoride contamination of water varies from 1.0 to 48.0 mg/l1 across
various states in India.

Naandi Water

Naandi Water installs and operates community water plants, which consist of a small building
housing a water treatment unit. Headquartered in Hyderabad (state of Andhra Pradesh), the
organization currently operates in 4 Indian states (Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana,
Rajasthan) and manages 400 plants.

The expected outcomes of the Safe Drinking Water Project are:

a. Reduced cases of Fluorosis, High TDS and Pathogen linked health problems
b. Improved overall health of the rural communities
c. Expanded access to safe drinking water to a wider section of society, especially
people with lower purchasing power, who in the past would not have had access
to treated water
d. Enhanced employment opportunities within the village
e. Reduced health expenditure/debt burdens
f. Increased school attendance
g. Increased productivity of rural communities

Cost factor:
1. Naandi will collect a fee of Rs. 7.00/20 Liters as purification &
service charges for purification of the water along with door
delivery charges at your premises.
2. Naandi will collect fee of Rs. 140 for 20 Lit can as a one time
investment for carrying of the treated water. This can is made of
food grade material and hence we have also eradicated any
possibility of arsenic contamination of water, thus ensuring 100%
pure water for the Satya Bharti school students
