    A blunt injury or gun shot to the tibia can cause a fracture, bleeding from the damaged bone ends and surrounding tissue, forming a hematoma within the medullary canal and between the fractured bone ends beneath the periosteum. This leads to the immediate death of adjacent bone tissue and stimulates an intense inflammatory response involving vasodilation, exudation of plasma, leukocytes and growth factors that decalcify the fractured bone ends, increasing capillary permeability and fluid and cellular exudation, resulting in edema, pain from compression of nerve endings, and impaired function.
