Title : Bending Moment in Beams
Experiment 3: Bending Moment in Beams

OBJECTIVE:
Part 1: To comprehend the action of moment resistance in a beam.
Part 2: To measure the bending moment at a normal section if a loaded
beam and to checks its agreement with theory.

SET OF APPARATUS:
Bending Moment Machine HFC 5.

PROCEDURE:
Kindly refer to the lab manual page 11&12.

NOTATIONS:
Fzer = Spring balance reading force at unload state, N
Fbar = Spring balance reading force at loaded state, N
Fnett = Net force, N (F-F)
ME = Experimental bending moment, Nmm
MT = Theoretical bending moment, Nmm
W1 = Weight on the first load hanger, N
W2 = Weight on the second load hanger, N
W3 = Weight on the third load hanger, N
RESULTS:

Part 1
a) Bending moment at C for loading on each of the load hanger.

Load Balance Reading (N)/ Net Exp.Bending Moment, Theo. Bending

(N) force (N) for load at ME (Nmm) Moment, MT (Nmm)
W1 W2 W3 W1 W2 W3 W1 W2 W3
0 20 20 20 0 0 0 0 0 0

20 28 46 33 1200 2400 1950 1778 4000 2000

Part 2
a) Bending moment at C for superposition of loading.

Loading (N) Balance Reading Net Force Bending Moment

(N) (N) (Nmm)
0 20 0 0
W2 = 5 26 6 900
W1 = W3 = 10, W2 = 5 40 20 3000

b) Bending moment at C for various loading.

Loading (N) Balance Reading Net Force Bending Moment

(N) (N) (Nmm)
0 20 0 0
W2 = 5, W3 = 12 36 16 2400
W1 = 5, W2 = 10, W3 = 2 36 16 2400
DISCUSSIONS:

a) From this experiment, we found that when the load is doubled, the bending
moment also doubled.
b) This experiment is valid and successful since the percentage error between the
experimental and theoretical bending moments is below than 5%.
c) The small percentage error may occur because of some human mistakes or
apparatus problem.
d) However this error can be ignored since the percentage error is so small and
acceptable.

CONCLUSION:

The experiment results are verified to the theory. The greater the load, the greater the
bending moment in beam.
