First Grade News

February 28-March 4, 2011

What we’re learning


Our Bible stories for this week are “Mary Shows her Love for Jesus” and “Jesus Rides
into Jerusalem.” We will be reading “June and the Mule” and “Slim, Luke, and the
Mules” in our basal reading books. In Phonics we are working on the long “u" sound and
consonants ng and nk. Math will include adding 10 to a number. In Music we will
continue learning notes through the use of tonettes (small recorder). Weather and
temperature will be discussed in Science this week.

Assignments
Here are some ways to challenge your child:
Math – Make a graph for you and your family. Keep track of numbers you hear or see
that are multiples of ten (ending in a zero). For each number you receive a point.
Record results on your graph by using tally marks. At the end of the week
determine the winner!
Reading – Identify the plot of a favorite movie or story read at home.
Writing – Write a new ending to a familiar western story.

Math Facts (especially review “doubles plus one” facts)
Tuesday March 1: Memory Treasure: Mark 10:45
Read “June and the Mule”
Wednesday March 2: Read Christ Light “Jesus Rides into Jerusalem”
Read “Slim, Luke, and the Mules”
Thursday March 3: Spelling Test (fish, long, such, that, four, were, use, tune,
*break, *heaven)

• March Book orders will be going home today. The due date for them is March 25.
