The differences between piping and instrumentation drawing (P&ID)

and process flow diagram (PFD).

A piping and instrumentation diagram/drawing (P&ID) is a diagram in the process industry

which shows the piping of the process flow together with the installed equipment and
instrumentation.
A process flow diagram (PFD) is a diagram in engineering to indicate the general flow of
plant processes and equipment.

PROCESS PIPING AND INSTRUMENT FLOW DIAGRAM The P&ID provides a detailed definition of
piping, instrumentation, and equipment.

It serves the following functions:

- Describes equipment
- Shows all instrumentation
- Shows piping and valuing
- Provides the basis for detailed design
- Aids in trouble shooting during start-up and operation.
- Contains the controlling instrument details not the flow rate details

WHILE..

PROCESS FLOW DIAGRAM

The PFD is meant be a description of the process.

It serves the following functions:

- Shows the basic processing scheme

- Shows the basic control concept
- Shows process information from which equipment can
specified and designed
- Provides the basis for development of the P&ID
- Serves as a guide for the operation of the plant
- Contains process fluid flow details these are designed flow rates of the
plant.
