This document outlines a case study comparing an indoor and outdoor electrical substation. The study examines the differences between various electrical equipment used in each, including circuits, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, control panels, relay panels, bus bars, station supply, power transformers, power cables, isolators, and lightening arrestors. It also examines the layouts and design criteria of each substation. The case study was conducted by visiting and thoroughly studying an indoor substation at 33/11kv Panjeshah and an outdoor substation at 33/11kv Salarjung of the Andhra Pradesh Central Power Distribution Company Limited.

With increased urbanization and scarcity of land, the electrical distribution companies and transmission companies are forced to accommodate the sub stations within the cluster of houses for economic operation and reduction of losses. Hence the shift is from outdoor substation to indoor substation. As a case study an indoor substation at 33/11kv salarjung substation and indoor substation at 33/11kv panjesha of apcpdcl were visited for several days and thoroughly studied. The differences between various electrical equipment used in two types of substation, such as circuit’s, instrument transformer's, disconnect switches, control panels, relay panels, bus bars, station supply, power transformers, power cables, isolators, lightening arrestors, layouts, the design criteria of substation were examined, verified and presented as a case study in partial fulfillment of requirement of a mini project for 3rd year 2nd semester.
