COMPANY FACTS
Launched in 1991, STAR is the wholly owned subsidiary of News Corporation. STAR India is the most viewed network in Indian television. STAR was the pioneer of satellite television in Asia and initiated growth in television industry in the entire region. It is headquartered in Hong Kong, with regional offices in India, mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, as well as in other south Asian countries. STAR has more than 300 million viewers in 53 countries and is watched by approximately 120 million viewers every day. STAR India has also taken the best of Indian content to a global audience, reaching the Indian Diaspora.
STAR TV is estimated to have made a growth of 10% in 20082009, whereas it registered a growth of 20% in 2007-2008*. STARs channels are now available in the U.S., the U.K., the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong.
STAR DEN: (50%) STARDEN is 50:50 joint venture between STAR India Pvt Ltd and DEN Networks Limited (DEN) to create a platform for distributing television channels in India via all fixed networks including cable, DTH, IPTV, HITS and MMDS
Fox STAR Studios: (50%) A joint venture with Twentieth Century Fox to produce world-class local-language films in Asia for worldwide distribution.
Hathway Cable: (22.2%) Established by the Rajan Raheja Group, Hathway Cable is one of the largest multi service operators in India. It entered into strategic alliance with STAR in September 2000.

Tata Sky Ltd.: (20%) A joint venture with the Tata Group and Temasek, Tata Sky offers unprecedented direct-to-home satellite TV service in India, offering a host of programming choices and interactive features. RECENT LAUNCHES
Tere Liye the most recent launch (14/6/10) opened with a very good rating viz. 3.8 TVR. Sasural Genda Phool (3.1 TVR), Pratigya (5.1 TVR), Saathiya (2 TVR), Yeh Rishta (5.2 TVR), Bidaai (5 TVR), along with Zara Nach Ke Dikha in the non-fiction category (2.5 TVR), which has the channel seeing a growth of 108 GRPs over last week.

STAR India announced two more of its channels Star One (Hindi) and Star Vijay (Tamil) are available on mobile TV.
Star is simultaneously working on bringing Star Player, its online video streaming portal, onto the mobile in the form of an application.

ESPN Star Sports (or ESS and stylized as ESPN STAR Sports) is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company (through ESPN Inc., which it directly owns) and News Corporation (through Star TV which it directly owns). ESPN Star Sports is currently in the process of down-linking of their new channel: "ESPNews India" to India.

Malayalam general entertainment channel Asianet, is the No. 1 channel in the Southern state of Kerala. The April 25th grand finale of the singing contest scored a record breaking TVR of 28.79 in its female target group, achieving a share of 71 percent and GRPs of 307 It holds an approximate share of 45% of the Kerala market.

UPCOMING VENTURES
STAR TV will also soon shift a part of its uplinking operations to India. This includes those of all India feeds, from here instead of Hong Kong. This move will make STAR India responsible for uplink and downlink of all Indian channels instead of STARs Hong Kong office. Launching regional language channels will remain the top priority, while the group will continue to explore other interest areas like the Home Shopping channel foray, movie production, and several other avenues. STAR India MassStore WorkFlow Asset Management (WAM) suite helps to store material in an orderly way, digitize new programs, and save the files in digital format.
EXPENSE HEADS
STAR is estimated to spend over $20 million annually on uplink of over 35 channels from Hong Kong.
India-centric channels will be shifted from Hong Kong to India for uplink, this move may lead to savings of 20-25% of the operational costs..

STARs third quarter operating results improved versus the same quarter a year ago on 43% advertising revenue gains led by the Indian mark. Star India is expecting its ad revenues to surge 10 per cent due to brand-oriented solutions. Star Indias revenue in the year to June 30 is expected to reach $550m, up 15 per cent over a year earlier, and operating profit $105m, 11 per cent higher, according to Media Partners Asia, a research firm.

STAR India insider says the company would have earned around Rs 850 crore-plus from subscription revenue in 2008-09, compared to around Rs 550 crore-plus in 2007-08, a jump of over 55%, while maintaining its overall ad revenue for the 2009 fiscal. STAR India could be worth more than 1.6 billion in Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) by the financial year ending June 2013.
