Demonstration: Microsoft Office in an English Classroom

Abstract This demonstration highlights how Microsoft Office, in particular Office Word and Office Publisher can be utilized to their fullest potential in an English language learning classroom. The demonstration applies largely to upper secondary students especially in completing classrooms written projects. Besides, feature like speech recognition also helps students to improve on their pronunciation. Desktop publishing is equally important nowadays as it is a good tool to motivate writing. The introduction of various Microsoft Office features, English language lesson becomes more lively and interesting. The underlying theory is that application software is viewed as a cognitive tool that promotes thinking. Demonstration includes step-by-step guidance of software features such as word count, spelling and grammar, thesaurus, summarize, speech, desktop publishing for brochure. Some samples of students work will also be exhibited as evidence of the usefulness of this strategy. Biodata Miss Wong Woei Ling is currently an English teacher teaching in SMK St Elizabeth Sibu. She is also the teacher-in-charge of the schools e-learning portal (www.eliza.edu.my). Her interests lie in English literature and technology. She strongly believes that at this digital era, teaching and learning process should be dynamic. Incorporation of technology in language teaching-learning is inevitable to suit the pace of the rapid development of the internet.
