Measurement: A quantity that has both a number and a unit.

Accuracy: A measure of how close a measurement comes to the actual or true value.

Precision: A measure of how close a series of measurements are to one another.

Evaluating Accuracy: Compare measurements to correct value

Evaluating Precision: Compare the values of 2 or more repeated measurements.

Work #57 on pg 96

Accepted value = correct value based on a reliable reference (like the Periodic Table). Experimental value = value measured in lab. Error = experimental value accepted value

Percent error = l Error l x 100 Accepted value (look at pg 65!)

Work problem in Fig 3.3 pg 65

We use very large and very small numbers in science

The mass of an atom is 0.000000000000000000000327 g In scientific notation this is 3.27 x 10-22 A gram of Hydrogen contains 602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms In scientific notation this is 6.02 x 1023

First part: Coefficient

Must be 1 and <10

Second part: Power of 10

It is a whole number and >0 if the number is greater than 1 and < 0 if the number is less than 1. 100 = 1

Write 0.0578 in scientific notation

5.78 x 10-2
Write 33,947 in scientific notation 3.3947 x 104 Remember: A number less than 1 must have a negative exponent!

Type in the coefficient Find the EE, EXP, or x10n key Type in the power of 10.

Dont multiply by 10! Use the key listed above thats on your calculator!
