The cargo of shipwreck 7 in the Pagasitic gulf.

A preliminary interpretation

STELLA DEMESTICHA

Since 2003, Hellenic Institute of Marine Archaeology (HIMA) has been excavating a shipwreck
(Shipwreck 7) on the west coast of the south part of the Pagasitic gulf, to the south of the bay of
Nies. It has been demonstrated that the wreck has been disturbed and the present picture of the
cargo is therefore not the original. Nevertheless, the type and variety of amphoras in the cargo are
such as to establish the find as one of great importance for the study of amphoras in the Late Antique Aegean. The archaeological record to date indicates that the ships cargo consisted of at least
three types of amphora. It is dated on comparative grounds to the late 4th c. AD.
We are probably dealing with a small ship engaged in the carrying trade in the area of the Pagasitic gulf. The composition of the cargo is characteristic of this transitional period. A few years
after the wreck, that is, from the 5th c. onwards, the steadily increasing demand for goods in the
Eastern Mediterranean led to the strengthening of some of the traditional production centres, with
the result that we now speak of common types of amphora that were distributed throughout virtually the whole of the empire. At the same time, other areas, depending on their location, appear
either gradually to have been supplanted, or to have remained active on only a small scale. All
three types of amphora from the wreck contained wine and represent these different types of production centre in the Aegean.
Type 1 (T1) amphoras probably come from an area that had few opportunities for exports, since
no parallels for them have so far been found in the literature. Despite this, they formed a significant part of the cargo. Typologically, they have many points of similarity with T2 amphoras, and
the two types probably come from regions that located close to each other.
The main part of the cargo consisted of LR2 amphoras, in one of its early versions [Type 2 (T2)
in terms of the amphoras from the wreck]. This is the only large group known so far of amphoras
of this type, which flooded the Aegean and Black Sea coasts over the following two centuries
(5th and 6th c.). Observations on the form of these early vases contribute to the study of the typological development of the type. Moreover, the fact that these amphoras were found coated
with tar on the inside casts considerable doubt on the generally accepted view that they were exclusively vases for transporting oil.
The provenance of T1 and T2 amphoras is probably to be sought in the Peloponnese or nearby
areas, where the surplus produce justified the production of them.
The quantity of Type 3 (T3) amphoras in the cargo is much smaller than that of the previous types.
Their forms have some affinity with amphoras from the eastern Aegean, especially Samos. They
possibly represent the small production centres of the eastern Aegean which, on account of their
nautical character, strongly expanded their pottery production in Late Antiquity.
