Quadratic Function

Definition of Quadratic Function

Quadratic function is a function that can be described by an equation of the form f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, where a 0. In a quadratic function, the greatest power of the variable is 2. The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola.

Examples of Quadratic Function

The following are few examples of quadratic functions.

More about Quadratic Function

Quadratic equation: An equation in the standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0, where a 0 is called a quadratic equation. Quadratic formula: A quadratic formula is the solution of a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, where

a 0, given by

Quadratic inequality: An inequality written in one of the forms y < ax2 + bx + c, y ax2 + bx + c, y ax2 + bx + c, or y > ax2 + bx + c is called a quadratic inequality. Quadratic term: A term ax2 is the quadratic term in the equation f(x) = ax2 + bx + c

The Shortcut Formula To The Rescue! There is a very simple way to find the vertex of the quadratic y = ax2 + bx + c. The vertex of y = ax2 + bx + c will be at x = -b/(2a). To find the y-value of this vertex, simply substitute your x-value into your equation. Furthermore, the graph will be a shift of y = ax2 i.e. it will have the same shape as y = ax2. Its that easy! Example: Use the Shortcut Formula to find the vertex of y = 2x2 + 8x - 5. Then graph y = 2x2 + 8x - 5. Substitute a = 2 and b = 8 into x= -b/(2a) to get

x = -8/(22) = -8/4 = -2 . Substitute x = -2 into y = 2x2 + 8x - 5 to get y = 2(-2)2 + 8(-2) 5 Simplify to get y = -13. The vertex is at (-2,-13). Also, we know that the graph will be a shift of y=ax2, which in this case means our graph is a shift of y = 2x2. The vertex is at (-2,-13). Also, we know that the graph will be a shift of y=ax2, which in this case means our graph is a shift of y = 2x2. We move 1 unit right and left from the vertex and two units up to plot the points (-3,-11) and (-1,-11).
