Fig1 TheCook,theThief,hisWifeandherLoverisaromanticcrimedramathatwas screenedin1989.Thefilm,writtenanddirectedbyPeterGreenawayrevolves almostentirelyaroundaLondonrestaurant.AthoroughlyrepulsivecrimeBoss (playedbyMichaelGambon)ownstherestaurantandeatsthereeveryevening alongwithhiscroniesandhiswife(playedbyHelenMirren).Despitethegangs raucouspresence,therestaurantisalwaysfullandthewifefindshereyesdrawn toaquietmanacrosstheroom.Beforelongtheyhavebecomelovers,seeking refugeinthevariousstoreroomsoftherestaurantwiththesympathetichelpof theCook. Theintroductionofthisfilmisanythingbutagentleone;itisan immediateinsightintothedisgustingbehaviourofGambonscharacter,Mr AlbertSpica.Interestinglythischaracter,foralmosteverymomentheispresent onscreen,continuestotalk;thisverbaldiarrheaishighlightedbyLeo Goldsmithinhisreview.Albertgorgesindiscriminatelyongourmetfood,loudly lectureshiswifeandassociatesonsocialproprietiesofwhichhehimselfseemingly

hasnonotion.(Goldsmith,2010)Theconstantlecturingonetiquetteandother thingsleadstoasubconsciouspleafromaudiencesforhimtostopcreatingsuch adin,especiallywhenhestrivestobeamanofclassbutonlyeverappearstobe anoik Mirrenscharacter,MrsGeorginaSpica,thelongsufferingwifeofAlbertis bycontrastsubdued,constantlyhumiliatedandbeatendownbyheroverbearing husband.Butshefindsreliefintheeyesofaquietgentlebooksellerwhoalso frequentsthesamerestaurant.Minutesafterspottingeachothertheycommitto theirfirstsexualactintheladiesbathroom.Nowalthoughthemomentsof passionfilmedbetweenthesetwocharactersarehighlyerotic,theymakeoddly sereneviewingcomparedtothebrutalbehaviourofAlbertfortherestofthe film.Souncompromisinginitssavagerythatthesexseemstranquilby comparison.(Ebert,1999)ItcreatesawelcomebreakfromAlbertscontinuous spouting.Theonlynaggingfeaturemightbethesettinginwhichthepairmake love.Nakedbodiesinthevariouspantrieswhilestaffareevencreepingaround thepairdoesmakeforslightlyoddorawkwardviewing. Theclearestandmostinterestingfeatureofthisfilmisitsuseofcolour anddecadencewithinthesetdesign.thediningroom,withbrightredwalls, carpetsandtablesettings.ItisdominatedbyacopyofaFransHalspainting, whose17thcenturycharacterswearclothingremarkablylikethatofthethief's unsavorygroup. (James,1990)(fig2)Eachroomhasitsowndesignatedcolour. Thesecoloursarealsoreflectedinthecostumeofmanyofthecharacters, connectingthemtotheirsurroundingsandaddingaverytheatricalelementto thefilm,strengtheningmoodslikelust,danger,envyandmuchmore.

Thisfilmcontainssomeofthemostpotenthumaninstinctsanditiswhat makesthefilmsohardtowatchbutgrippingatthesametime.Despiteitsfalse theatricalappearancewiththechangingcolours,thisfilmdemandsanemotional responsefromitsaudiences.IfviewersmanagetositthroughAlberts grotesqueryandfindreliefinthescenesofthelovers,theyeventuallyfind themselvesembroiledinthefinalscenes,desperatetoseehoweverythingends. ItissaidrevengeisbestservedcoldTheCook,TheThief,HisWifeandHer Lovermaychangeonesopiniononthematter.
