MOMS Club hosts
Trunk or Treat
By KRISTEN DOWD
The Sun
Children decked out as tiny
dragons, pint-sized fairies and lit-
tle ladybugs converged on St.
Peters Episcopal Church park-
ing lot recently, ready to flutter
about for an early Halloween cel-
ebration.
The special occasion was the
MOMS Club of the Medford
Areas annual Trunk or Treat,
when participating moms deco-
rate their car trunks in Hal-
loween dcor and children pa-
rade around the parking lot,
trick-or-treating at each vehicle.
The Trunk or Treat is just one
of many special events hosted by
the MOMS Club, which is cur-
rently at 92 members strong.
The idea (behind the club)
was to give moms with small chil-
dren something to do with their
children, club president Leslie
Hurff said. I know a lot more
people now. And I feel like were
giving back. I think its good for
moms to meet other moms going
through what theyre going
through.
Club membership vice presi-
dent Corlynn Hullfish added that
Medford is not a sidewalk com-
munity, and the club affords
both moms and kids an opportu-
nity to socialize and meet others
from the area.
Its all about meeting people,
she said.
The first MOMS Club started
in California in 1983, and now
there are more than 1,500 chap-
ters around the country. The
Medford chapter started in 2006
when it branched off from the
former Marlton-Medford MOMS
Club.
Hullfish said the Medford club
works to be all-inclusive, welcom-
ing all area families. Members
come from Medford, Medford
Lakes, Shamong, Tabernacle and
parts of Southampton.
In addition to special monthly
events, like the Trunk or Treat,
the club hosts a number of regu-
lar activities, such as monthly
Crafts and Coffee get-togethers
and weekly age-organized play-
groups. A few times a month,
there are field trips.
We just had our Scarecrow
Stroll, where we looked at the
scarecrows decorating Main
Street, Hullfish said.
Every couple of months, the
club hosts service projects. Some
months, the club visits seniors at
Medford Leas. Other times, it
hosts food drives.
We also donate money from
fundraisers to Medford schools,
KRISTEN DOWD/The Sun
The MOMS Club of the Medford Area held its annual Trunk or Treat event on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The club
draws members from Tabernacle. Participants decorated their trunks in cobwebs, banners, pumpkins and
more for Halloween. For more photos from the event, please see page 11.

Police: Arrest made
in murder case
Detectives from the New Jersey
State Police have made an arrest
in the murder of Lisa Armstrong,
47, of Trenton.
A 37-year-old man, of Trenton,
has been arrested and charged
with murder and felony murder
kidnapping in the death of Arm-
strong, according to police.
On Oct. 8, detectives with the
New Jersey State Police Major
Crime Unit and the Troop C
Criminal Investigation Office
began an investigation into the
death of Armstrong, whose body
was found in the woods along
Route 206 in Tabernacle. Arm-
strongs body was discovered by a
surveying crew shortly after 8
a.m. She was found a few yards
into the trees at the side of the
rural highway. Evidence indi-
cates that Armstrong was shot
and killed at the location where
she was located, and the murder
likely took place within 24 hours
of her discovery.
Since the discovery, State Po-
lice detectives from the Major
Crime Unit, Troop C Criminal In-
vestigation Office and Crime
Scene Investigation Unit, have
been working around the clock
examining evidence and follow-
ing leads.
On Saturday, Oct. 12, the man
was placed under arrest by State
Police detectives. The Burlington
County Prosecutors Office au-
thorized charges of murder and
felony murder kidnapping.
Burlington County Superior
Court Judge Claypool set bail for
him at $1,000,000. He was lodged
in the Burlington County Jail in
default of bail. The motive re-
mains under investigation as well
as other aspects of the case.

The Sun
For the Tabernacle Board of
Fire Commissioners, the fifth
time turned out to be the charm
as residents approved the $650,000
purchase of a new pumper truck
in a special election held Oct 12.
It really was a combination of
excitement and anxiety, you al-
most dont want to get too hope-
ful, Board of Fire Commission-
ers treasurer Nancy Freeman
said. Seeing that it had been ap-
proved by residents was exciting.
By only a three-vote difference,
residents approved the purchase
182-179. Because of the close mar-
gin, the boards excitement was
initially tepid.
Seeing a difference of only
three votes we recounted and dou-
ble-checked everything on our
end so we would be ready to re-
spond if there was a challenge or
a request to contest the election,
Freeman said. Hearing from the
Burlington County Board of Elec-
tions that it was official was when
we really could be excited and re-
lieved for the first time.
The pumper truck will be
equipped with a compressed-air
foam system that stretches a 500-
gallon pumper to 1,500 gallons
when air and foam are added.
That feature is vital in a town that
has no fire hydrants, officials said.
The board had seen the pur-
chase be voted down by residents
four different times before this
successful attempt. Originally
this election was scheduled to
take place in July but due to a
posting error it had to be resched-
uled for October. Unlike a typical
election, which requires the fire
district to post signs in 10 places
10 days before a vote, special elec-
tions mandate that the postings be
done 21 days prior. By the time of-
ficials learned of the require-
ment, it was too late to correct the
situation.
We always felt that the biggest
thing holding back residents from
approving this was just a knowl-
edge of how much we do need this

John Bulina has our best
interest at heart for BOE
I have known John Bulina at the nation-
al education level for the past seven
years. In my capacity as president-elect of
the National School Boards Association
and liaison to the New Jersey School
Boards Association, I have great respect
for John.
John is a man of great integrity and
honesty. He is well respected for his ability
to form relationships and seek input from
his colleagues and peers. He is one of the
most ethical people I know.
He understands the challenges we all
face in public education and he is focused
on making sure all children succeed.
Johns leadership at the national level,
whether serving on the national nominat-
ing committee or a participant in our
workshops or seminars is genuine and ef-
fective. He truly cares. He is a hard worker
on behalf of New Jerseys schools.
There are many styles of leadership.
The ability to bring others together to lis-
ten and come to consensus is one of the
most effective. It moves an organization
forward to achieve for all our children.
John has that ability.
At a time when public education is
under siege, we need our leaders to be able
to encourage and bring together various
constituents and speak with one voice for
public education and the children in our
care. John can do that.
John Bulina is a kind, trustworthy, ethi-
cal and caring man. He has the best inter-
est of public education and children at
heart.

G
hosts, goblins, ghouls and a lot
of superheroes and princess-
es will be parading up and
down streets in town in one short
week. Halloween is an exciting time
for kids, parents and neighbors alike.
Its a time for fun, a time for laugh-
ter, a time for adorable pictures, a time
for candy, a time for celebration and a
time when we all need to pay attention
to safety.
First and foremost, motorists need
to be extra cautious when driving
through the streets that day, not just in
your own neighborhood, but sur-
rounding ones, as well. Make sure to
be aware of trick-or-treating hours,
and be especially careful when dark-
ness settles in. Be especially alert in
residential neighborhoods, as kids
tend to run excitedly from house to
house.
Parents should be on high alert that
day as well, reminding their kids to
look both ways before crossing the
street and cross only at intersections
and cross-walks, when possible.
If kids are trick-or-treating without
adult supervision, make sure they
know the route so they dont get lost
and confused. Other safety tips, cour-
tesy of the website, www.safekids.org:
Decorate costumes and bags with
reflective tape or stickers and, if possi-
ble, choose light colors.
Choose face paint and makeup
whenever possible instead of masks,
which can obstruct a childs vision.
Have kids carry glow sticks or
flashlights to help them see and be
seen by drivers.
When selecting a costume, make
sure it is the right size to prevent trips
and falls.
If you need more tips or tricks of
the trade for trick-or-treating, visit
www.safekids.org. The local police de-
partment will also have safety recom-
mendations, and the municipality will
also have more information about spe-
cific rules and regulations for the day.
Be safe this Halloween. And most
importantly, have a scary good time!

District to spread payments
over several years for truck
truck. Weve already responded to
310 calls this year, Freeman said.
According to Freeman, the
board will be drawing up specifi-
cations over the next few months
before submitting the plans to the
Department of Community Af-
fairs. If approved, the plans can
then go out for bid. It will take ap-
proximately eight to 10 months for
the truck to be built.
When the new truck is deliv-
ered, the existing fire truck will be
moved to the emergency services
building across town. The move is
designed to provide more protec-
tion to the eastern side of the
township and decrease some resi-
dents homeowners insurance
costs by as much as $300 per year,
according to fire officials.
Despite the election being de-
layed and unsuccessful attempts
in the past, Freeman said she was
impressed with voter turnout.
We had 32 absentee ballots
submitted which was our highest
ever, Freeman said. Our hope is
residents know that this purchase
is for them and for their safety.
The district plans to enter into
a lease-purchase agreement for
the truck to spread the payments
over several years. The purchase
will not cause fire taxes to rise
since $1.6 million bonds will be re-
tired in November, officials said.

KRISTEN DOWD/The Sun
The MOMS Club of the Medford Area held its annual Trunk or Treat event on
Wednesday, Oct. 16. The club draws members from Medford, Medford Lakes,
Shamong and Tabernacle. CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP LEFT: Laila Pinto, 2, is all
smiles; families gather in the parking lot near the end of the Trunk or Treat fes-
tivities; Danica DiPerna, left, and Maisy Ryan share a giggle while enjoying
their candy; Brennan, 4, and Lacey Potter, 2, take a break from saving the day
to enjoy their loot; Cecilia Hetzel, 5, and Ashley Sherman, 4, discuss their
Trunk or Treating loot; and Henry Hurff, 17 months, enjoys a lollypop. LEFT:
Maribel Smith, 2, plays in a box filled with seeds and toys.

Voters still have time
for mail-in ballots
With multiple elections on the
calendar, Burlington County
clerk Timothy D. Tyler alerted
Vote-By-Mail voters to be on the
lookout for separate Vote-By-Mail
ballots in the mail.
In addition to the regular Gen-
eral Election on Nov. 5, there was
the Special General Election for
United States Senate on Oct. 16.
This has been, and continues
to be, a very involved election
year for residents, said Tyler.
We are doing everything we can
to ensure voters are aware of the
Vote-By-Mail deadlines for each
election, especially now that
some of the ballots are in the
mail.
We are urging residents to
take special care with the Vote-
By-Mail ballots since there will be
multiple ballots out at the same
time, said Tyler. Envelopes
must match the ballots that they
are returned in. If anyone has
any questions or concerns, they
should contact my office immedi-
ately at (609) 265-5229.
Some Vote-By-Mail ballots have
already been mailed, said Tyler.
He noted that military and over-
seas voters for the November
General Election are also now in
the mail.
Voters still have ample time to
apply for a Vote-By-Mail ballot for
the general election. In order to
have a ballot mailed to them, vot-
ers need to be sure their complet-
ed application is received in the
county clerks office seven days
prior to the election.
After that, voters may apply in
person or by authorized messen-
ger in the clerks office until 3
p.m. the day before the election.
Ballots for the election are easily
distinguished.
General Election on Nov. 5
Deadline to apply for a Vote-
By-Mail ballot is Oct. 29 (post-
dated)
Deadline to apply in person
for a Vote-By-Mail ballot is Nov. 4
before 3 p.m. Ballots will have no
stamped designation on the enve-
lope.
The outbound and return ad-
dress labels in each Vote-By-Mail
envelope set will indicate the
name of the election. Voters are
encouraged to open, vote and re-
turn each ballot separately as the
ballots must be returned in the
envelopes provided for each elec-
tion. Ballots cannot be combined
in a single envelope set.
Once a voter receives a Vote-
By-Mail ballot, they will not be
able to use a voting machine at
their polling place. If the voter
does go to their usual polling loca-
tion, they will be required to cast
their ballot on a paper Provision-
al Ballot.
Voters are reminded that they
must have the assistor portion
(section 11) of the Vote-By-Mail
application filled out if they re-
ceive any help in completing the
application.
Finally, a voter may select one
of the options for future Vote-By-
Mail ballots in section 10 of the
application.
Option A entitles the voter to
receive a ballot for all elections in
the same calendar year of their
application. This option must be
renewed every year by complet-
ing a new application.
Option B entitles a voter to
receive a ballot for all future Gen-
eral Elections. This option does
not expire until the voter requests
they no longer be sent.
The Vote-By-Mail application
is available on online at
www.co.burlington.nj.us/county-
clerk. Once on the County
Clerks website, click on Election
Services.
Voters may also have an appli-
cation mailed to them by calling
the Clerks Office Elections Sec-
tion at (609) 265-5229.

public servants. While each
leader brings unique capabilities
and characteristics, all embrace
an understanding that communi-
ty service is an honor and a privi-
lege, requiring personal and pro-
fessional sacrifice and a strong
moral compass. Our greatest
leaders exhibit the courage and
strength to fight for those beliefs
and principles that reflect the val-
ues and priorities of the commu-
nities they serve. A shining exam-
ple of such moral courage and
passionate leadership is John Bu-
lina. Tabernacle is indeed blessed
to be served by a man such as
John Bulina who steadfastly be-
lieves in the absolute necessity of
providing to every child the op-
portunity for a great public edu-
cation. Bulina believes in the Tab-
ernacle community and em-
braces the role that public educa-
tion will play as a vital resource
to attract business and industry
as well as to prepare the children
of Tabernacle for engaged citi-
zenship and global competitive-
ness.
Bulina is a leader. His demon-
strated leadership on his local
school board and as president of
the New Jersey School Boards As-
sociation has delivered positive
and transformational change that
benefits the Tabernacle commu-
nity as well as the entire state of
New Jersey. He is a strong, effec-
tive and courageous advocate for
public education and school
board governance. Bulina under-
stands that the public school is
the symbol of our democracy. He
recognizes that the future of our
local community, state and nation
will be largely dependent on our
ability to provide a great educa-
tion for all children. Bulina is
also a tremendous national
leader, representing the beliefs
and values of Tabernacle and
New Jersey on several national
platforms. America needs more
leaders like Bulina, individuals
who are willing to take a stand for
the principles and issues that will
empower our children to achieve
their dreams and fulfill their po-
tential.
Our Founding Fathers under-
stood that for our nation's experi-
ment in representative govern-
ment to long endure, we must
have an educated citizenry. Buli-
na understands that now is the
time to take a stand for public ed-
ucation. Bulina understands that
public education is more than a
civil right. Public education is a
vital national security interest.
Tabernacle needs leaders like
John Bulina who possess the
courage and the skill to fight for
our children and for our future.
Together we can change the
world, one child at a time. John
Bulina will helps us lead that
change.
