Dear Passengers,
The EU presidency airport lounge operated by Malv received more than 6000 foreign diplomats and specialists during the six months of Hungarys EU presidency. Our aircraft displaying the official logo of the EU presidency flew diplomats, experts and journalists from 17 EU member states to Budapest, where the high-ranking delegations could take advantage the specially designed lounge. I am proud to say that the professionals travelling with us could concentrate on their tasks since efficient, top-level facilities were at their disposal in the course of their travels. We ensured a high-quality standard of service, which is expected of us both at home and abroad. For this period we intensified our activities, establishing a special working party to coordinate tasks. Thanks to the organised, finely tuned work, we smoothly and successfully handled the significantly increased traffic throughout the entire period, while behind the scenes we also had to deal with a host of moving and organising tasks in connection with the opening of the new Malv Lounge in SkyCourt. Looking back over the past six months, I believe Malv proved worthy of bearing the title EU presidency official carrier and there was a great deal of positive feedback, both directly and indirectly. In July the presidency logo is being removed from our aircraft, but naturally that does not mean that our services will change since Malv continues to operate at the highest standard. The city centre can be reached from the airport in a number of ways: 1. Airport Minibus minibuses from the airport to any destination in Budapest (return journey possible). Single tickets: 11 euros for one, 17 euros for two. 2. Ftaxi contracted partner of Budapest Airport. Find the taxis and external desk at the airport terminal arrivals. 3. Public transport airport bus 200E takes passengers to the Kbnya-Kispest underground terminal, from where trains go to the centre. Georgian Storm
As part of a central European tour involving 25 stops and lasting almost one month, members of the Caucasian Georgian National Dance Theatre understandably known around the world as The Flying Georgians are appearing in Hungary during the early summer. Georgian Storm, a fiery performance full of energy, dazzles the audience with the dancers amazing virtuosity, graceful choreography and festive costumes, and involves a huge historical pageant expressed in dance. The show, which has been performed in numerous Hungarian towns since the middle of June, is due to make a final, stormy appearance in Szkesfehrvr on 7 July.

The highly successful cultural festival formerly called the Veszprm Summer Festival is being held in the town of queens for the 8th year running. This summer internationally noted performers are coming from Africa, Brazil, London and Stockholm. The four-day music extravaganza opens with a concert by Grammy Awardwinning Brazilian singer, guitarist and songwriter Gilberto Gil. The following day sees performances by the British funk and acid jazz super band Incognito from London, and the Scandinavian Nils Landgren Funk Unit. On Friday 29 July Concerto Budapest takes the stage with Amadinda and Ferenc Sntberger. Together they will bring the atmosphere of a romantic Spanish night to Veszprm Castle. On Saturday one of the worlds most famous artists from Africa, Mory Cante, will crown the event now known as VeszprmFest.

Public access archive

The archives of Hungarys Jewish communities hidden in the building of the Dohny Street Synagogue have survived the past 80 years, which is not something obvious as the collection has often been endangered by volatile and ideologically-charged situations. Today the Hungarian Jewish Archive is one of Europes biggest and most complete Jewish archives which, apart from a few professionals, is unfortunately not well known. In the interest of overcoming prejudices and revealing the secrets surrounding Jewish life and the archive, from summer 2011 anyone can visit the archives newly reconstructed depository, open its huge drawers holding documents, look through its picture racks, explore the corridors between shelves, and see what and how an archive preserves things. Needless to say, central Europes unique public access archive includes the most beautiful and most interesting items in the collection illustrated manuscripts, official records of the old communities, a collection of seals dating back to the 18 th century, honorary diplomas, family documents and photos, as well as the preserved written legacy of past religious communities.

programajnl Kroly Mark and his Circle

Mark was one of the 19th centurys most popular, inter nationally prominent painters. He lived outside Hungary most of his life, but he never lost touch with his homeland and a whole generation of Hungarian Romantic landscape painters regarded him as their master. Without exception, young budding artists visiting Italy in the 1840s and 1850s called on him. Mark was the first Hungarian artist to become internationally noted during his own lifetime. His paintings were bought for the best international collections and commissioned by monarchs and aristocrats. Yet a large-scale retrospective of his oeuvre, such as the present one in the Hungarian National Gallery, has never been held. Gbor Bellk, the gallerys chief museologist and a curator of the exhibition explains why. It is primarily because he lived mostly in Vienna and Italy, and a large part of his oeuvre is abroad. Now many paintings by Mark are on show which have never before been exhibited for the Hungarian public. Moreover, a great number have never previously left their original location. Half of the exhibited 150 works are owned by the Hungarian National Gallery, the other half have been selected by the curators from 15 museums abroad and 22 private collections. Paintings are on loan from Copenhagens Thorvaldsen Museum they were personally bought from Mark in Rome by the great Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and quite a few works are from Viennas Belvedere and the Hofburg commissioned by Ferdinand V in 1847 and never actually moved from the wall of the imperial palace. Others have come from Barcelona and even Mexico. Due to his international popularity, among works by 19th -century painters those of Mark fetch some of the highest prices in the art trade. Some of his large size or elegant compositions can reach 100-150 thousands euros at auctions. Although he was one of the few artists whose paintings were purchased at high prices already in his lifetime, Mark was only just able to get by, despite his abundant income. He supported his children, his son-in-law a revolutionary during Garibaldis time as well as his pupils. In his letters he constantly complained about what he could not afford and how much he was owed. As is often the case with great artists, money simply ran through his fingers. The exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery is the first comp rehensive presentation of the oeuvre created by this genius of landscape painting. It also includes works by his children and followers.

Dance in the Carmelite Courtyard

The usual summer dance month in Budapests Carmelite Courtyard begins at the end of July and promises to be a great spectacle even for those who are not explicitly devoted to dance, since the location itself is an attraction. A former Franciscan church which stood here functioned as a mosque during the Ottoman occupation, following which, when Buda was recaptured, the Carmelites were granted the ruins and built a new Baroque church and monastery. After dissolution of the order, the church was converted into a theatre to the designs of Farkas Kempelen. Today the quiet, cobbled courtyard between the ivy-covered former monastery walls serves as a stage. The performances of old Mezsg (26 July) and Kalotaszeg (28 July) dances staged by the Honvd Dance Theatre, the dance variations of the Varidance Company (27 July) as well as BailAmor, a fiery Flamenco and Argentinian tango show by Andrea Lippai and Petra Bnhidi, could not be imagined at a more fitting location.

programmes Szeged Open-air Festival is 80 this year

Once again this year the town by the River Tisza is welcoming visitors to the Szeged Open-Air Theatre Festival with an array of theatre performances, including exciting new productions. The festival opens with a new production of The Tragedy of Man by Imre Madch, one of the most frequently performed plays at Dm Square it was on 61 times over 16 summers and it was performed nearly every year in the early, glorious period of the festival. The second premire of the 2011 season features The Merry Widow, one of Ferenc Lehrs most popular and prominent operettas. Carmen directed by Gbor Kernyi Mikls, performed with great success last summer, represents a repeat production in line with the festivals traditions. Somewhere in Europe, the winner of the festivals online votes, is this seasons new musical premire. The programme also includes a contemporary musical about Popeye, the spinach king, two one-act operas, Gianni Schicchi and Mario and the Magician, as well as an extra concert by the Szeged Symphony Orchestra playing Liszt, Smetana, Borodin and Dvok compositions.

Chinese terracotta army in Budapest

The legendary terracotta army of Chinas first emperor, known as the 8th wonder of the world, is stationed in the VAM Design Centre until the end of September. The tomb of Emperor Quin Shi Huang di was accidentally found in Xian, Shaanxi province, in 1947 when local farmers were digging a well. For a long time no one believed they had come across an army of several thousand life-size terracotta figures. After the treasures existence was proved, UNESCO declared the magnificent find a World Heritage Site. The exhibition in Budapest, which features high quality copies of the emperors terracotta army, presents Pit 1 of the excavations at Xian. It includes 100 life-size warriors and horses, as well as weapons.

Gyula Summer Arts Festival

The Arts Festival of Gyula Castle Theatre is welcoming friends of culture and the arts with different events almost every night from the 1 July to 14 August. Besides theatre performances in prose and music, the events include a jazz and blues festival, a literary humour festival, contemporary drama recitals, films, conferences, a photographic exhibition, a gastronomy and wine festival, as well as puppet theatre and various dance performances. The star of the summer events is the three-day Krs Valley Fete when visitors can learn about the best handicraft creations, folk dances and folk music of the Southern Great Plain region. The fifth Humour Festival presents ten noted Hungarian writers who will read their works written specially for the occasion. The Gyula Castle Jazz Festival celebrates its 20 th anniversary with twenty Hungarian jazz musicians and the American Victor Bailey Group. The blues festival will feature the great American singer Eb Davis, the Austrian Ripoff Raskolnikov who forms a duo with the internationally noted harmonica player Mtys Pribojszki, and Egon Pka who will evoke Jimi Hendrix on base guitar. As 2011 is the Year of Liszt, the Castle Theatre is presenting Ferenc Liszts Christus Oratorio performed by the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchest ra, the Kodly Choir and the Lautitia Childrens Choir. The Madch Theatre will tempt spectators to Gyulas Stage on the Lake with its performance of Andrew Lloyd Webbers musical The Phantom of the Opera.

Mirt vlasztotta a gitrt?

My father didnt have the opportunity to study, although he was a fantastic guitarist. I already had the opportunity to study jazz guitar at the Budapest Conservatory. I learnt self-assurance and a certain bearing from my dad, and I want to pass that on to the centres pupils. Our centre differs from traditional music institutions in that we explicitly encourage children to express themselves in music. Here they gain self-confidence so that they can stand their ground anywhere in the world.
What made you choose guitar?

Liszt Prize winning guitar virtuoso Ferenc Sntberger disseminates multicultural values. He fuses Roma traditions, Latin effects in music, jazz and traditional guitar technique in a sophisticated way. On 4 June an old dream of his came true when the Sntberger Music Talent Centre was inaugurated in Felsrs near Lake Balaton. Sntberger, one of the greatest artists of acoustic guitar improvisation, can be next heard live on 29 July at this years VeszprmFest when he will bring a romantic Spanish night to Veszprm Castle along with Concerto Budapest and the Amadinda Percussion Group.

I left Hungary because, like every musician, I needed to find new fellow performers and create new things, gain inspiration and develop. Berlin entirely enchanted and got a hold of me when I first visited the city. Its a truly multi-cultural, cool place with a fantastic cultural life from music to cinema. I remember when our son was enrolled in nursery school it was totally natural that he attended together with Chinese, Japanese, African, Roma and Jewish children. To me this cultural diversity is Berlins main attraction.

One of Europes most popular open-air festivals has reached adulthood, being now 18 years old. Once again this year therell be no shortage of experiences or international stars. The Pop-Rock Main Stage will see appearances by Pulp, who last gave a concert in 2002, Dizzee Rascal, voted Best Male Performer of the Year in the 2010 BRIT music awards, Rise Against, the rhythmic hardcore guys from Chicago, Flogging Molly with their fusion of Irish folk and punk, and Chemical Brothers the great come-back. The festivals new Europe Stage will see artists from across the continent who can fill stadiums at home but have not yet hit the big time internationally, such as Triggerfinger, known as the Flemish AC/DC and the Belgian Queens of the Stone Age, and Verdena, one of Italys most popular alternative rock bands. The second Kaposvr International Chamber Music Festival is scheduled for 1219 August. Exceeding expectations, last year visitors numbered more than 13,000. This spring the Museum of Fine Arts launched a project with the aim of examining four mummified bodies held by the museums Egyptian Collection. In addition to traditional methods of Egyptology, tests included CT scanning, histological examination and DNA analysis. To be or not to be? No need to ask, since undoubtedly the Shakespeare Festival in Gyula on Hungarys Great Plain is at the forefront of summer cultural events each year. But another quotation from the same drama is perhaps even more appropriate: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy More things featuring again at this years festival include the best of Hungarian and foreign Shakespeare performances, dance shows, films, concerts, a conference, street theatre performances and a Renaissance feast, not to mention A Midsummers Wine Dream. The world-famous Lithuanian Oskaras Korsunovas, who has already excited Hungarian audiences with his Shakespeare directions several times, has his first performance of The Tempest in Gyula, while the also internationally noted Georgian, Robert Sturua, is making his debut with a festival prize-winning Twelfth Night, or What You Will. The HOPPArt Theatre Group is presenting an alternative Coriolanus, the rkny Theatre is performing a traditional King John, while the Tamsi ron Theatre from Sfntu Gheorghe, Romania, is coming to Gyula with The Merchant of Venice, which featured in the official programme of the National Theatre Festival of Pcs and the Festival of Hungarian Theatres Abroad in Kisvrda. The Gyula Castle Theatres Troilus and Cressida opens the festival, which also features Shakespearean pub songs and risqu ballads by Musicians of the Globe, as well as Zoltn Lantos and his formation who are bringing a Renaissance atmosphere with jazzed sonnets. The show coming the farthest to Europes only extant castle on a plain (A Midsummers Nights Dream) is from South Korea, while the youngest (Romeo and Juliet by the School Theatre) is from the Budapest FRINGE Festival.

Bernardo Bertolucci can be linked to Visconti concerning education and taste, and related to Pasolini regarding his lack of sexual taboos, while his liberal views draw him close to French New Wave directors. Inspired by his father, he wanted to be a writer and he won a literary prize with a book of poems when still young. Bertolucci regards Jean Luc Godard and Pier Paolo Pasolini, who he met as a family friend, as his godfathers in cinema. Pier Paolo, a protg of my father, saw I was resolved to make films and took me on as his assistant for Accattone. Obsession and striving for perfection characterised him. The taboo-shaking sensuality of Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider kicked up a huge storm. Banned in Italy, the film did only good for Bertolucci commercially. Just as Paris is the city of lights, Rome is the eternal city and Venice is the city of water, so Montenegro is the gem of the Adriatic, leaving countless competitors behind. The coast is full of bays, islands, peninsulas and graciously stretching cliffs. Its flora includes olive groves, palms and citrus trees, while the countrys towns recall the atmosphere of the Orient and a medieval fairy-tale world. The average sea temperature in July is 25 C and the varied, multi-coloured sea bed is visible even at a depth of ten metres through the dark blue water. There are almost 2,700 hours of sunshine on the coast and it hardly rains, at least in summer. When there is wind it is mostly the mistral, a pleasantly refreshing afternoon breeze of the warm summer months. The Adriatic here is absolutely calm, being whipped up only by such rare phenomena as a sudden visit of the nevera, a strong western wind bringing powerful storms with rain, or when during training Budvas water polo team score a goal in their spectacular pool, a sectioned off part of the sea.

In the town
Budva is Montenegros largest and busiest seaside resort where the beach business with its plastic Budva souvenirs, flashy flip-flops and sarongs meets luxury yachts, expensive fashion labels and the medieval atmosphere of cobbled streets. Walking on the Renaissance-era walls surrounding the old town you encounter a somewhat chaotic image: the clatter of cafs and cocktail bars, the smoky smell of fish mingling with the sea from the seaside fish bars and the 15th-century town gates recalling the past bring some film-like experience to the mystic spectacle of the captivating, infinite sea. At the harbour swaying little fishing boats quarrel with huge yachts slowly rocking with dignity. In the towns evocative narrow streets elegant local ladies balancing on their high heels struggle with the cobbles, while in the aforementioned sea pool Budvas water polo team is preparing for the European League should you happen to be there at the right time. The team was again among the best four this year, but when playing to reach the final they were beaten by Pro Recco when, as it happened, the Hungarians Kss, Benedek and Madaras scored goals.

Podgorica can be reached from Budapest in less than an hour by scheduled flights operated by Malv. From there you can easily get to the coast by local bus, train or taxi. Following the principle of Mediterranean punctuality, buses in Montenegro depart either earlier or later than the timetable indicates, thus a taxi ride is recommended the official Montenegro taxi company takes you to Budva in about 50 minutes for 40 euros. The best restaurants are around the old town and the harbour. A three-course dinner costs 30-60 euros per person. A glass of beer comes to 2-3 euros and youll have to pay 4-6 euros for wine. 7-8 euros will buy a cocktail, while you can enjoy a soft drink or coffee for 1-2 euros. Gastro bloggers think the best restaurants in Budva are Astoria, Jadran, Porto, the Garden Caffe, Hemingway and Kod Krsta, while Kviscos, Jeff, Wineria and Club Trocadero appear as the coolest night clubs. For some romantic time on an isolated beach, boldly bargain with the water taxi drivers lingering at Budvas harbour. They are familiar with the local sights and knowledgeable about wellhidden little bays and unpopulated rock islands nearby. How come that Hungary has traditionally been a water polo superpower? The baths and pools in Budapest were built on thermal springs, thus training could happen in water of 25-28 C all year round more than 100 years ago, well before the invention of water circulation systems. At that time our opponents trained in cold water, so they swam in order not to be cold, but we learnt to handle the ball. Thus our ball control is 100 years old. Of course, a lot of work has been invested in order to keep this advantage for such a long time. We first won an Olympic gold in 1932 and we have reached the top eight times since. That means we are head and shoulders over other nations. Its in the air. When a young boy comes to the pool he breathes that in; thats how hes socialized that we are the best, we defeat everyone in the world. On the one hand it becomes natural and on the other it drives him, giving him much motivation. There is a tradition he follows and he doesnt want to lag behind. Weve managed to carry on in this way for nearly 80 years. What does this sport provide for young boys? Firstly, its very healthy. Boys develop huge chests and arm muscles, they grow taller. These physical features will characterise them all their lives. In addition to the results, why mothers en courage their sons to become water polo players is because theyd like them to look like men they would have fallen for in their younger days. Today four times as many young people play water polo in sports clubs than in 1997, before the first successes of the present team. We are very pleased about it and at the same time its a great responsibility. It may sound strange to ask the most successful water polo coach of all times, but what have you added to Hungarys water polo? Until 1997 team sports in Hungary had a 100-year-old tradition whereby young players in the teams were often somewhat bullied by the older ones. I created an atmosphere relatively early whereby the old players help the young. After all, if the new players dont have to jump hurdles often under humiliating conditions they quickly gain confidence, a feeling that they belong to the team, and then they perform better and grow up to the task. It is time to part with the popular Hungarian approach of if a lake, then Balaton, since Hungary has two other, smaller but rather goodlooking lakes. Lets take a close look at them!

Lake Velence, situated half way between Budapest and Lake Balaton is Hungarys second largest lake, and thanks to sunshine and shallow water it is one of Europes warmest, its water temperature often reaching 28 C in hot summers. Lake Velence is rich in minerals, especially sodium and magnesium, thus bathing in its waters is good for anyone exhausted by work and lifes tribulations. In addition, it is suitable for easing rheumatic ailments. Standing by the shore you immediately notice a typical feature of lakes in Hungary one side is bounded by hills and the other is flat. Thus it suits all tastes. Hill enthusiasts look down with superiority on those preferring flatlands, while the latter defiantly say that with the hills they have the better view. Its an irreconcilable contradiction. However, lets splash in between the two, namely into the lake. You can do that at almost all the villages around Lake Velence with Agrd, Grdony and PkozdSst being the best known. Bathing is complemented by plenty of canoeing opportunities for the fit. On the lake, two-thirds of which is covered by reeds, you are accompanied by the spirit of Mr Matula, the main character of Thorn Castle, the most popular Hungarian childrens film of the 1960s. Its best to dip your paddles lazily and leisurely in the water like he did, while looking to the right and left. If lucky, you could even catch sight of an otter. You dont have to be bothered

Yet a great contradiction it also seems there is absolute silence. Can you imagine? Spare some time for wondering around the reeds its worth it. If you lose your way, which can easily happen, you can always find a patient angler round the next corner. After hes vented his anger over his broken line, muttering he shows you the way out. Of course, you can change gear and get sporty, but train only for a short distance and you wont get out of breath. Those preferring a less active holiday can hire pedalos with or without built-in slides the inevitable equipment of beaches in Hungary. Tourists and those hoping to learn a thing or two should not miss a boat trip. Theres a great choice. In the order of ages, first there are trips for nursery school children with a guide talking

about the environment, so in the reed labyrinths the youngest can learn about such fairy-tale-like creatures as herons, aigrettes, giant catfish and tiny warblers. By the choir of frogs there may even be an enchanted prince, if nowhere else but in the kids imagination. Then there are boat trips for school children when, as part of the mobile environment lesson, pupils hungry for knowledge get binoculars and microscopes, and if they wish they can listen to talks about the history of the lake, its flora and fauna, the Bird Reserve and the floating islands. But lets stop for a second. Its not well known that one of Central Europes most extensive sudds can be found on Lake Velence. Imagine island-like formations with boggy soil that accommodates rare plants. A long list of its native species could be given, exhausting the full peat bog section in the Large Plant Identification Handbook, but anyone wanting to know can look them up.

Lake Fert, Hungarys other small lake, also does well in terms of reeds. So much so that hardly any open water can be found in the Hungarian part (comprising about a fifth, the rest belongs to Austria), but even half the part on the other side is also covered by reeds. The lake, a ten-minute drive from the town of Sopron, is truly one of natures gems. Its worth making a two-minute detour to the memorial park of the Pan European Picnic, which became recognised as the cradle of German unity. Lake Fert is known as Europes most western steppe lake. This is clear even for those of us who are not Doctors of Science in geology: its eastern shore, a sandy flat area, looks amazingly like Hungarys Hortobgy region. Even mirages appear sometimes! Needless to say, the western shore presents a peaceful hilly landscape, as found in western Hungary. The Fert Cultural Landscape, in its official designation, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And a bit more science: it also warms up quickly and the water temperature can reach 30C in the summer. The shore is flanked by very beautiful villages and small towns. The bathing opportunities primarily attract families with young children, which is no surprise since the average water depth is 50-60 centimetres and even at its deepest it does not exceed 180 cm. At the same time, the lake is rather capricious it has no constant shoreline and its size changes continuously. Furthermore, it dries out every 100-120 years. Thus in 1866-69 the area was ploughed over and buildings were constructed in the middle what had been the lake bed. But it has also been recorded that it increased in size to that of Lake Balaton, swallowing five villages. Nevertheless, it is not really visible when you are winding through the peaceful, reedy water world with its bays and islands. Since Lake Fert is 12 times bigger than Lake Velence, life on the water is far busier. Both sides can boast of many marinas empty in good sailing weather. Sailing began on the Austrian side 100 years earlier than on the Hungarian shore and Hungarians could not even touch the water due to the sealed border area up to 1958. In Austria 7000 yachts are registered for Lake Fert more than the number for Lake Balaton and races are plentiful. Moreover, to further increase the Hungarians envy the Austrian Olympic team trains here, at Neusiedl am See. Tour sailing is also highly popular, so you can enjoy a trip in the spirit of we are not going to get exhausted, followed by the essence of being together: making friends on the shore, food and drink, known in German as saufen drinking. At many places individual holidaymakers can hire just about anything for the water, from windsurf boards, pedalos and kayaks to electric speedboats. You can easily and painlessly row or flounder over to the opposite shore, which is worth it since you can find gems such as Fertrkos with its famous quarry, bishops palace, restaurants and wine cellars. The first village across the border, Mrbisch, draws visitors with fascinating performances on a water stage. My favourite place, however, is Rust, a charming, authentically neat Austrian small town situated at about the middle section of the lake. When approached from the water you first catch sight of roofs with stork nests. Nearly all the houses have lodging stork families. No wonder they are depicted in the towns coat of arms. Walking along the evocative high street there are other pleasures to be had as it quickly turns out that Rust is the centre of the Burgenland wine region. Local producers have set up smart wine tasting outlets on the ground floors of their houses. Besides the many cyclists (a 140 km long beautiful cycling track winds around Lake Fert) people engaged in water sports constitute the majority of the thirsty. The local reed world is similar to that of Lake Velence, except its much larger. A local feature is that a broad, reedy and swampy stretch with canals of different

sizes separates the open water from each village. Time can be spent on picturesque shores with their marinas, beaches, piers and promenades. Catering establishments, snack bars, restaurants and cafs are plentiful on both sides of the lake. Several companies operate boat trips. The tiny, open-decked, white and blue flat-bottom boats are a cheerful sight amidst the waves. The largest operator is the Austrian Drescher Shipping Co. with its boats calling at all the ports of Lake Fert. Besides scheduled runs, it also organises school trips which can include biology lessons, National Park tours and full round trips on the lake. Special boats go to Mrbisch for the water stage shows. Spoilt for choice, we eventually opted for a Captains Lunch tour, though we nearly went for a cauldron party. The smoked eel with butter and onion rings and the grilled fillet of pikeperch sprinkled with almond flakes can be heartily recommended. Standing on the pier at Neusiedl am See, the aforementioned small town on the northern shore of Lake Fert, is an appropriate spot for a farewell. The whole lake with its glittering water surface, the surrounding hills and the plain can all be viewed from here and be prepared: at sunset the spectacle is like a picture postcard! Hajdu Lszl

It is noteworthy that besides sweltering hikes the hills also offer countless easy walking paths, adventure tracks and exciting experiences that can easily be tackled even with a pushchair. There is, for example, the narrow gauge railway running between Gyngys and Mtrafred. Its perhaps not a typical adventure sport experience, but you can turn travelling on the train into a family event bordering on adventure. It doesnt puff and certainly doesnt speak like Thomas the Tank Engine, but it hoots, clatters and moves on the rails, which is a pure delight for a three year old. The journey an experience itself, but far more exciting is to closely examine the red and yellow engine at the Mtrafred terminal. For a wider view of the hills after the wheel bolts, set off from the terminal to the 370-metre-high Kozmr peak or the Muzsla lookout on the Muzsla peak at nearly 500 metres both can be done with an easy walk with the Mtra hills all around. When it comes to the view the Vrs-k (Red Rock) look-out at 781 metres, a bit farther on by Mtraszentlszl, beats all but even at a height of 300 metres you can easily spot a deer shooting through the forest, a wild boar family or Mr. Fox if the latter happens to be lurking around, of course. Otherwise, once near the villages bearing saints names its good to walk along the nature trail starting from Bgs Meadow by Mtraszentimre, where information boards tell you about almost the entire flora and fauna of the Mtra Hills.

If you no longer feel like climbing peaks yet the desire for adventure is at its peak, once you are in the Mtra the Oxygen Adrenalin Park is a must. It not only draws you to the neighbourhood of Sst and Mtrahza with great adventures but also with a breathtaking view, wooded hills and a tree-top obstacle course. The bob-sled track open throughout the year is perhaps the ace for most, but its also not easy to get children away from the quad course or the forest labyrinth once they discover those. Here you dont need much to raise your adrenalin. Suffice it to cross the 183-metrelong suspension bridge at a height of nearly 30 metres over the quarry abyss or still here to glide along a zip-line at a similar height or rather depth from one side of the quarry to the other. As for myself, Im so daring only when I close my eyes and scream loudly, but if youre bold enough and open your eyes while gliding along the line its not only your voice but your breath that would stop on seeing the view. After all that, to tackle the adventure park on tree trunks 5-6 metres high is childs play, even if you are acrophobic. True, there are situations when you are left on a tiny platform between two tree trunks when no chain, stick or something to hang onto seems to be in sight to help you carry on. Once youve had a narrow escape on the Alpine slide, the suspension bridge and the giant Hardinga swing turning full circle, you have completed the climbing wall and balanced on thin cables, wobbly nets and tree trunks like Tarzan and feel as if there was no hope then, cheer up at this point, abandon the struggle for a moment and admire the view filtering through the trees assuming you are taller than 1.2 metres, a requirement for the adventure park. Malv passengers to check-in at Terminal 2B

As from 1 June check-in procedures for Malv passengers have changed following the opening of SkyCourt at the end of March. Check-in for all Malv services is handled exclusively at Terminal 2B of Ferenc Liszt International Airport, where there are four additional check-in desks. Once that is completed and after spending time in SkyCourt, Malv passengers are to present themselves for boarding in exactly the same way as before, that is they depart from the terminal serving either Schengen or non-Schengen destinations. Accordingly, arrivals are also handled in the same way, i.e. passengers coming from Schengen countries arrive at Terminal 2A and those coming from nonSchengen countries arrive at Terminal 2B. Passengers will find a redesigned and more spacious Malv ticketing office at Terminal 2B, while the office at Terminal 2A has closed since the introduction of the new operating system.

More than 30 flights a week to the Mediterranean summer sunshine

In the summer season Malv flies to Barcelona, Malaga, Corfu, Zante, Heraklion, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Larnaca, Varna, Burgas and Split, namely the most popular seaside resorts in Spain, Greece, Bulgaria and Croatia. The Hungarian airline operates an average of 37 holiday flights to the most popular resorts by the Mediterranean and the Black Sea in the summer peak season. While flights to Barcelona have been included in the airlines route network as a new destination in its timetable, Malaga and Split have been part of Malvs summer offer for many years. The Hungarian national carrier has opened several of its routes which were earlier operated as charter flights for individual travellers. In this years season Zante, Rhodes, Heraklion, Corfu and Burgas have been included in the scheduled flights from among charter operations. Besides flights with resort destinations, others ope rated throughout the year are also popular with tourists, such as those to Varna, Larnaca and Istanbul. FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria played its final decisive game against Mar Alicante for the handball Cup Winners Cup in Alicante, Spain. Following the trying match, the Hungarian girls brought the prestigious trophy to Budapest on board a Malv charter flight. The plane flying the delegation from Budapests Francis Town district bringing the Cup Winners European Cup landed at Ferenc Liszt International Airport at 9.50 p.m. on the day of the final. Captain of the team, Zita Szucsnszki, remembers their reception at the airport with pleasure: Thanks to our fans numbering some 200 who followed us to Alicante, we could already celebrate abroad as if we had been playing at home. Then on board we began getting ready to continue celebrating in Hungary, but what awaited us at the airport surpassed anything we could have imagined. Malvs charter flight was a great help to us because we could travel at the most suitable time without having to change to an otherwise not easily accessible destination considered rather distant in Europe. In effect, Malv contributed with a couple of goals to our cup success totalling five goals.

Budapest Airport is this year implementing four voluntary initiatives in the spirit of corporate social responsibility. As one of the participants in Hungarys nationwide Committed to CSR Excellence programme, the operator of Ferenc Liszt International Airport has announced that it is significantly enhancing its corporate social responsibility policy.

Together with eight organisations with similar CSR policies, Budapest Airport is participating in the first Committed to CSR Excellence programme. Participants employ a self-evaluation system, a form of internal benchmarking, to develop their CSR practice, thereby giving an example to Hungarian companies. The programme is based on the Organisational Excellence Model of EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management). The participants have expressed their intention to implement at least three successful CSR projects during the next year. Budapest Airport has decided to enforce environmental considerations in its future procurements. This means that in addition to price, the environmentally conscious operation of a partner company will also be important, with social and environmental indicators being added to its performance evaluation system. In addition, the airport will continue and extend its now traditional and successful good neighbourly cooperation with localities in its vicinity, whereby it aims to share the advantages of the operation of the airport with more residential communities. As a further step, Budapest Airport will establish a new system for and facilitate the participation of its employees in the decision-making process. The airport operator has already shown commitment to corporate social responsibility as demonstrated by a series of earlier voluntary initiatives. In recent years Budapest Airport has significantly reduced its energy consumption, implemented several noise protection projects and concluded cooperation agreements with neighbouring local authorities. Following completion of the programme, the company will be able to compete for the Committed to CSR Excellence award and the European Committed to Excellence certificate, which are to be presented together with national quality awards at a ceremony in the Parliament building later this year.

The hotel with its unique features opened in the Art Nouveau listed building of the former Hungria Baths a year ago and almost immediately became one of Budapests most trendy hotels. Horizon talked to director Zoltn Gher on the occasion of the anniversary. You can quite frequently encounter a spa in central Budapest. Did this hotel also revive the building of a former spa?

A lobbyban ma is lthat oszlopok az egykori frd kzponti medencjbl lltak ki. A 20-as vek msodik felben a frd egyik rszt szllodv alaktottk, ez lett a hres Continental Hotel. A frd a msodik vilghbor utn bezrt, ksbb a Ringer csaldtl llamostottk. A csald leszrmazottja Rthelyi Mikls nemzeti erforrs miniszter, aki tavaly szeptemberben nneplyes keretek kztt nyitotta meg a szllodnkat. Az 50-es vekben az Operett Sznhzhoz hasonl tetrumm alaktottk t az pletet. Sok hres mvsz megfordult itt, kztk Medveczky Ilona, Latabr Klmn s Rtonyi Rbert. A hotel 1970-ig mkdtt, a sznhz 63-ban zrt be. A rendszervltskor j tulajdonosa lett az pletegyttesnek, de nem bizonyult j gazdnak, s gy nem tudta megvalstani elkpzelseit. Az pletet vgl a mostani tulajdonosnak adta el, aki a memlkhez mlt mdon kezelte azt, s a Continental Hotel Zara ngycsillagos dizjnszlloda formjban jjvarszolta az egykori szllodt.
Mit szlt a szakma a memlkplet feltmasztshoz?

A baths, then called Hungria, already stood here in the 19 th century. Its great hall, seen today in the hotels foyer, was built in 1907. The baths was a huge complex with 1,500 changing cubicles and all sorts of pools and tub-baths. The columns in the present lobby used to emerge from the central pool of the former baths. In the second half of the 1920s part of the building was converted into a hotel, which became the famous Continental. The baths, owned by the Ringer family, was closed down after World War II and the property was later nationalised. Mikls Rthelyi, the Minister of National Resources who ceremonially opened the hotel last September, is a descendant of the family. In the 1950s the building was converted to a venue similar to the Operetta Theatre. Many popular artists played there, including Ilona Medveczky, Klmn Latabr and Rbert Rtonyi. The theatre closed in 1963, though the hotel functioned until 1970. The complex acquired a new owner at the time of the 198990 changes, but matters were not well managed and the new owners ideas were not implemented. In the end the building was sold to its present owner who handled it as a listed building should be and, by giving it a new lease of life, turned the former hotel into the 4-star design hotel Continental Hotel Zara.
What did professionals have to say about breathing life into the listed building?

A magyarorszgi memlkvdelem legismertebb szemlyisgtl, Rday Mihlytl fotkat vsroltunk az pletrl, s a mennyezeten lv Zsolnay dszek maradvnyait is sszegyjtttk a trmelk kzl, amelyek alapjn megcsinltattuk az eredetivel megegyez csempedszeket. A Memlkvdelmi Hivatal vgig felgyelte a munklatokat. Az erfesztseknek ksznheten a szllodnk fbejrata is teljesen gy nz ki, mint az egykori frd.

We have won countless awards, for example the Podmaniczky Award, and were also acknowledged as the Best Hotel Deve lopment. Everyone was looking forward to the hotels opening since the building had previously been known as a ruin. For example, the present main building was inhabited by homeless people who made fires. As a result we found only the burnt down remains of the main entrance, an ornamented brass revolving door. Despite such difficulties we insisted on the original features. We bought photographs of the building from Mihly Rday, Hungarys most well-known personality of his toric building protection, and we also gathered the remains of the Zsolnay ceiling ornaments from the debris. Using them we had the decorative tiles made corresponding to the originals. The Office for the Protection of Historic Buildings supervised the work throughout. As a result of all these efforts the hotels main entrance looks exactly like that of the former baths.

De nemcsak a Continental Hotel Zara, hanem a Boutique Hotel Zara is nagyon dizjnos.

That is precisely why the hotel is unique and appealing. Design in itself is an interesting issue, namely whether it is able to sell a hotel room. Ive always learnt and taught that the three most important matters for a hotel are location, location and once again location. Only then can we talk about the trademark, price, standard and staff. Design absolutely meddles with all this. However surprising it may be, it actually sells itself; that is, in our case design attracts guests. I regularly read comments about the hotel on the net and they are full of positive appraisal for its design. People highly rate the attractive glass, stylish furniture and beautiful rooms. The Barcelona chair, the armchair designed by the noted German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which can be found in all our rooms, is very popular. And there are many other small details that guests greatly appreciate. The fact that we have a pool on the roof where a beautiful view on the city can be enjoyed is another ace.
Not only the Continental Hotel Zara but also the Boutique Hotel Zara is noted for its design.

The latter was the first boutique hotel in Hungary. Foreigners as well as Hungarians quickly became fond of both Zaras. Were looking forward to seeing them in our caf, our venues for special occasions, wellness section and the AZAR Restaurant. We have a very attractively priced lunch menu, thus we also have many customers at midday. Our restaurant is bustling with life; we offer Sunday Brunch and organise wine dinners. From July throughout the summer we have BBQ parties with concert film screenings, and we also host cultural events like Murder at Dinner, a theatre performance when guests are drawn into the investigation while they enjoy a delicious tasting menu.

Our hotel occupancy is very good. Even in my wildest dreams I wouldnt have thought of reaching 90 per cent as early as the second month after opening. The staff wasnt prepared for such a huge number of guests, and we didnt have time to employ new colleagues. Occupancy was 87 per cent in April and May. Incidentally, the development of tourism in the Hungarian capital is significantly boosted by the code-share flights of American Airlines and Malv between New York and Budapest, which operate daily throughout the year.
Finally lets return to location you mentioned earlier. The Zara Hotel is situated in an excellent place from this aspect, too.

HUNGARIAN OCEAN FLIGHTS

Eighty years ago, on 15 July 1931, pilot Gyrgy Endresz and navigator Sndor Magyar became the first Hungarians to fly across the Atlantic. Their aircraft was called Justice for Hungary and with the realisation of their great Hungarian dream flight the idea was to call attention to the post-World War I Trianon Treaty and its tragic consequences for Hungary, whereby the victorious powers annexed two-thirds of the countrys territory. Planning for the flight was based on public subscriptions among Hungarians living in the USA. Postcards were sold for a dollar each in Detroit, then in February 1930 Harold Sidney Harmsworth Rothermere, the newspaper magnate and owner of the Daily Mail, offered $10,000. The Hungarian Emil Szalay, who had settled in the US, donated $25,000. The Lockheed Sirius two-seater, low-wing monoplane chosen for the flight was one of the most successful aircrafts of its day and was well-suited for long distances. Justice for Hungary took off from Harbour Grace airport in Newfoundland on 15 July 1931 and broke a record already in the first half of its flight, reaching the Irish coast in 13 hours and 50 minutes. Near the town of Gyr there was a problem with the fuel supply and very soon the motor stalled. Gliding, they approached the ground and in the afternoon of 16 July they made an emergency landing in a cornfield not far from Bicske. The 5770 km journey took just under 25 hours and 20 minutes a rate faster than anyone had achieved before. In addition, no one previously flying over the ocean had penetrated so far into the European continent, thus three world records were made that day. On 20 July The record-breakers were greeted as national heroes by a crowd of 100,000 at the Millenary Monument in Budapest. Gyrgy Endresz continued to work as a pilot, while Sndor Magyar returned to America in 1931 and established himself in the aircraft industry. A year later Endresz set off for a get-together of people who had flown over the oceans with his navigator and wireless operator Istvn Bitai. They reached Romes Littorio airport at 3 pm on 21 May, but while landing their aircraft spun round and crashed. Both men were killed. The funeral took place in Hungary, attracting a crowd of several hundred thousand. G. SZ.
