STEP FORWARD (Sheets with questions will be passed out to each student prior to activity, they will have

to answer each one and turn sheets in. They ARE NOT to put their names on sheets. Sheets will be redistributed to students and will follow the sheets for the activity) This activity will begin with everyone standing in a circle. Listen to each statement as it and follow the directions about stepping forward. Be sure to notice who has stepped forward and who stayed back.

1. If you have ever been scared to walk down a street at night because of what you were wearing, STEP FORWARD. 2. If you feel that you have been denied a job or promotion of the basis of gender, race, physical disabilities, or religious beliefs, STEP FORWARD. 3. If you have ever been sexually harassed in earnest, STEP FORWARD. 4. Please STEP FORWARD if you never really worried about crime, rape, or drugs in your neighborhood. 5. If anyone has ever made fun of you because of the way you speak (due to accents or a different linguistic code) or if you are sometimes embarrassed about the way you speak, STEP FORWARD. 6. If you almost always feel comfortable with people knowing your sexual orientation, please STEP FORWARD. 7. Please STEP FORWARD if you have no difficulty pressing the button for an elevator yourself. 8. Please STEP FORWARD if you can turn on the television and see people of your race widely represented on major networks. 9. If you know that you race and sex is widely represented in Congress, please STEP FORWARD. 10. STEP FORWARD if you feel that people sometimes interpret your personal opinions as representative of your entire race. 11. STEP FORWARD if you have ever been the only person representing your ethnicity in a classroom. 12. If there has never been a U.S. President of the same ethnicity as you, STEP FORWARD.

13. If there has never been a U.S. President of the same sex as you, STEP FORWARD. 14. If most American CEOs are the same ethnic background as you, please STEP FORWARD. 15. Please STEP FORWARD if you feel reasonably sure that your race will not work against you if youre trying to rent an apartment. 16. If you feel that people sometimes avoid eye contact with you or cross over to the other side of the street when facing you due to your sex or race, STEP FORWARD. 17. If you cant buy bandaids that match (more or less) the color of your skin, STEP FORWARD. 18. If you feel that, growing up, you were expected to do more household chores because of your gender, STEP FORWARD. 19. If you feel comfortable holding your (past, present, or future) girlfriends or boyfriends hand in public, please STEP FORWARD. 20. STEP FORWARD if you ever felt physically intimidated or threatened by a person whom you were dating. 21. If you feel reasonably sure that your race is unlikely to be held as a factor against you when applying for a car loan, please STEP FORWARD. 22. STEP FORWARD if you have ever felt that you were being closely watched for shoplifting due to your race. 23. If you can easily find staple foods that fit your cultural traditions in any supermarket, please STEP FORWARD. 24. If your religious beliefs differ from the majority at Loyola, STEP FORWARD. 25. Please STEP FORWARD if you can arrange to be in the company of people the same race as you most of the time. 26. If, as a child, you owned more than six books featuring characters who looked like you, please STEP FORWARD.
