9.1 Classroom work questions (25 marks)

1. How can you prove that you are living? (7 marks)

I am able to do the 7 life functions. They include metabolism, reproduction, synthesis, growth
and repair, regulate, nutrition, and transportation.
2. Do plants and animals share the same life functions? Give a reason for your
answer. (2 marks)
Plants and animals share the same life functions because they are both classified as living.
Something is only living if it does all 7 of the life functions.

3. Describe 2 ways in which plants and/or animals can respond to changes in their
surroundings (4 marks)
plants grow towards the light, humans put a jacket on when they are cold, we drink water
when we are thirsty, (many answers for this)

4. Describe in your own words the following terms (8 marks)

a. Torpor- a short term period of reduced body temperature and metabolism that helps
an animal conserve energy. Usually at night
b. Dormant- A period when growth has stopped for a period of time or indefinitely. Can
be short or long term
c. Hibernation- A long term inactive sleep like state when metabolism is reduced
causing the body temperature to drop. It occurs during the winter to that an animal
can conserve energy and survive harsh winters.
d. Estivation- is a period of inactivity brought on by drought or extreme heat.

5. What do hibernation, estivation and torpor have in common? (1 mark)

They all allow an animal to survive harsh conditions, they are brought on by temperature
changes, they all reduce metabolism ect

6. Some volcanoes are described as dormant. Are volcanoes alive? Is their dormancy
the same as that of a plant? What does “dormant” mean when it is applied to
volcanoes?
Volcanoes are not alive. Their dormancy is not the same as plants because when a plant is
dormant its not growing, when dormant is applied to volcanoes it means the volcano is not
active
