Safe School Action Plan Our vision at John F. Kennedy Elementary is to develop students critical thinking skills through a partnership of parents, students, school staff, and community members. Our school promotes an accepting, safe, and engaging learning environment for every student. We will achieve this vision by: Providing a rigorous standards-based curriculum instruction Differentiating instruction to meet student needs Cultivating students creativity and expression through the arts and technology Integrating Kennedys Kids of Character traits throughout daily routines Baseline Data and Resources: Kennedy Elementary School provides a pleasant, safe and clean learning environment for students, staff and parents. The layout of the school buildings as well as the ingress and egress onto the campus allows for easy visibility of student movement and promotes school safety. The safety of students and staff is always a priority. The schools disaster preparedness plan includes steps for ensuring student and staff safety during a disaster. Fire, earthquake and lockdown drills are conducted on a regular basis throughout the school year. At the beginning of the year and throughout the school year students are instructed on what procedures to follow in the event of a disaster. Emergency supplies are limited in both the individual classrooms as well as our central storage area. Upon arrival at school and during snack and lunch students are instructed to remain in an assigned area, playground blacktop and grass area, to facilitate proximity supervision of all students. This past summer, our fence was removed from the playground which previously was used as a boundary marker for the supervision area. The School Safety Committee meets as part of our Instructional School Support Team to review site safety concerns and to assist with the identification of items needing repair or creating a possible hazard. Our custodians ensure that classrooms, restrooms and campus grounds are kept clean and safe. All electrical, plumbing, roofing and meet applicable building and government code requirements. A scheduled maintenance program is administered by ABC Unified School District to ensure that all classroom and facility repairs are maintained to a degree of adequacy that provides for good learning. Areas Needing Change: There are two areas of concern that the Site Safety Committee has identified. In the area of the Schools Physical Environment, the school needs to update and increase emergency supplies in both the classrooms and in our central storage area. In addition, the lighting for the new parking lot needs assessment. Also, boundary areas for students need defining for hallways and blacktop. In the area of The School Climate, our programs for recognizing students achievements and consistency of school rules implementation need to be reviewed and revised.
