First Things First

First Grade Newsletter January 20, 2014

No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9!
Important Dates!
1/24 Staff Work Day (No school for students) ! 2/17, 2/18 Winter Break (No school)!

Science!
We will continue to learn more about solids, liquids, and gases this week! Check out the rst grade blog for some pictures of projects we did last week about the 3 states of matter. We would encourage you to help your child notice things in your house that are solids, liquids, and gases!!

Language Arts!
The students have enjoyed writing in their special January writing journals. They have written about their favorite types of weather, their favorite soups, and designed a pair of mittens. The rst graders have done a good job of thinking of creative ideas, and we will still work on putting in correct capitalization and punctuation into our writing. !

Important Notes!
Scholastic Book Order: Scholastic book order forms are due on Wednesday. Please write your childs name on the top of the form and try to send in exact change. Thank you!! Coding with Mrs. Hino: This Tuesday, we will have Mrs. Hino visit us and introduce the rst graders to computer coding with an iPad app. We look forward to learning more about coding!! Circle Time Update: Last week during Circle Time, we talked about being aware of others and their feelings. We encourage you to follow up with this at home and talk to your child about how to notice others feelings and respond as necessary. This week we will talk about perseverance and being willing to try something even if we might make a mistake.! Semester 1 is done! Our rst semester will end on Thursday. It has been a great rst half of the school year! Were happy with all the progress we have seen in the rst graders and look forward to seeing more growth during the second semester!!

Math!
We will continue our unit on place value this week.We especially look forward to using Kidspiration, a fun kids computer program, to make creative designs with virtual base-10 blocks. After the students have made their designs, they will gure out what number they have made with the blocks.!

Bible !

! We will nish our study of 1 John by making a colored bead bracelet that tells the story of Gods plan to save us. Each color on the bracelet will represent a part of the story (same colors that are sometimes called the wordless book). ! Our Bible verse is 1 Corinthians 2:9. It is so amazing to think of all that God has prepared for those who love Himits more than we can imagine! We look forward to reecting on this this week. !
